Sidehoppers, or Side Hoppers, are enemies encountered in many game throughout the Metroid series. They attack intruders by jumping on them. Sidehoppers seem to be able to defy gravity, as they are capable of jumping off of ceilings, then returning to the ceiling instant of falling towards the floor.

A Sidehopper in Kraid's hideout

They first appeared in the original Metroid, where they are fought in Kraid. In Metroid: Zero Mission, Sidehoppers are found largely in the same area as they were in Metroid, however, Samus does encounter a single Sidehopper in Brinstar.

In Super Metroid, Samus encounters Sidehoppers not only in Brinstar, but in Crateria and Tourian as well. Some of these were smaller and weaker than normal, but Samus does encounter three larger Sidehoppers in Tourian that she is only able to damage with Super Missiles. They first two are avoidable, however the third blocks off her path. Before she could destroy it, the Sidehopper is attacked and killed by the Metroid Hatchling.
