Dark Quad

From Metroid Wiki

Dark Quads are Luminoth-built machines possessed by the Ing. Like their light counterparts, they are separated into a Main Body and a Command Module. Both components are possessed by separate Ing, with the Command Module being possessed by a dominant one.[1]

Properties[edit | edit source]

The Command Modules use energy based attacks and are protected by an energy shield that can switch between a light and dark polarity.[2] The Main Body uses melee attacks, such as slashing with their legs or spinning.[3] When both components are combined, a Dark Quad is capable of firing a potent energy beam.

While combined, the Command Module is unshielded and vulnerable to any attack. The Main Body is more resilient and can only be damaged when it vents heat, which is done when its spin attack is interrupted or when the Dark Quad fires an energy beam. This exposes a venting system that is vulnerable to the Boost Ball and Bombs.[3] An unattached Command Module's shield can be overloaded by the Light or Dark Beams depending on the shields polarity, opening a window for attack.[2] The shield is incapable of stopping the blast of a Power Bomb, which destroys the Command Module instantly.

Like their light counterparts, a Command Module can attached itself to an unused Main Body if the one it occupied was destroyed. When one approaches a headless body, the body transmits a homing signal; however, this exposes its venting system. The ability to take command of another body is not just limited to a Darkling Main Body: a Dark Command Module is capable of attaching itself to a normal body as well. This can only be observed in the Sanctuary Temple if Samus destroys the Command Module of one of the two Quads in the room prior to its possession.

Samus first battles Dark Quads in the Sanctuary Temple. She encounters them a second and final time when she battles Quadraxis, a large Quad-like mechanoid capable of generating them.

Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Dark Quad CM
First Location: Sanctuary Fortress - Sanctuary Temple Limited Scan
The Ing discovered they could possess and control artificially intelligent machines as well as living beings. They soon turned the loyal Quad drones against the Luminoth, finding the tenacious machines to be quite useful additions to the Horde. A dominant darkling assumes control of the Command Module, forcing the lesser Ing in the Main Body to do its bidding.[4]
