Deca-Triticale

From Metroid Wiki

Deca-Triticale was a substance used by Space Pirates in the Elite Ration Mix fed to their Project Helix test subjects. Deca-triticale was later replaced by Phazon-infused Saturnines,[1] a cheaper, plentiful substitute.[2]

Grain used in Space Pirate rations

Origins[edit | edit source]

Triticale is a hybrid of wheat and rye. First bred in the late 19th century, Triticale was later introduced into science fiction on a popular episode of the show Star Trek called "The Trouble with Tribbles," wherein a grain derived from Triticale, "quadro-triticale," is superior to regular Triticale in that it contains four distinct lobes per kernel. Triticale appeared again in Star Trek: The Animated Series in the form of "quinto-triticale" that had five lobes per kernel. It is probable, then, that the Deca-Triticale used by Space Pirates had ten lobes per kernel.
