Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifiers (E.M.M.I.) are enemies in Metroid Dread. They are agile robots that were designed by the Galactic Federation; seven are sent to ZDR to investigate evidence of an X Parasite. However, the Federation quickly loses contact with them as they have been reprogrammed by Raven Beak to kill Samus Aran on sight.

E.M.M.I. appear throughout ZDR and patrol certain areas. If one spots Samus, it chases her and grabs her if she is caught. Samus is given an extremely brief window from which to escape with a Melee Counter, but if failed the E.M.M.I. will stab Samus through the chest, killing her instantly. E.M.M.I. are impervious to Samus's normal weapons and can only be destroyed with the Omega Cannon.

Concept and design[edit | edit source]

Yoshio Sakamoto first conceived the E.M.M.I. during the initial development of Metroid Dread, fifteen years prior to its eventual release date. Sakamoto envisioned the E.M.M.I as being similar to the SA-X from Metroid Fusion in its ability to pursue Samus, but significantly more difficult to escape from. However, Sakamoto stated that the hardware limitations of the Nintendo DS prevented him from realizing this concept. The capabilities of the Nintendo Switch allowed for the E.M.M.I concept the materialize, with Sakamoto proudly remarking that the E.M.M.I's gameplay exceeded his initial concept.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

The E.M.M.I. were deployed on ZDR after the Galactic Federation received a video of a living X Parasite which were previously believed to be extinct. After all communication was lost with the E.M.M.I. Samus Aran was sent to ZDR. Soon after being defeated by Raven Beak, Samus encountered E.M.M.I.-01P. The unit was severely damaged, it was sparking and missing a claw, it could also only walk in it’s bipedal form. The E.M.M.I. cornered Samus and caught her. Samus escaped it by using a melee counter and she slid between it’s legs. Samus quickly jumped on a platform and jumped onto another ledge. The E.M.M.I. walked over and since it couldn’t climb, it just aimlessly moved it’s arm without the claw up against the wall. Samus observed it for a bit and entered the next room where she obtained an Omega Cannon. Trying to find the E.M.M.I. it walked through the door she was just about to walk through. Samus shot it with the Omega Canon and destroyed it.

Later, Samus came across E.M.M.I.-02SM. This E.M.M.I. was white with a faceplate. Unlike E.M.M.I.-01P, which is scorched and sparking, missing it’s left claw, and missing it’s faceplate. Samus evaded the E.M.M.I. until she obtained another Omega Cannon. First, using the Omega Stream to destroy it’s face plate and then using the Omega Cannon to finish it off. After destroying -02SM, Samus obtains the Spider Magnet ability. In Cataris, Samus came across E.M.M.I.-03MB. This E.M.M.I. looks similar to -02SM but instead of white this unit is green. Samus destroyed it with the Omega Stream and Cannon. After defeating it, Samus regains the Morph Ball ability. In Dairon, Samus finds E.M.M.I.-04SB. This E.M.M.I. has a faceplate and it’s yellow. This unit can move faster than the past 3 E.M.M.I. Samus can also outrun -04SB. After obtaining another Omega Cannon, Samus can destroy it and regain the Speed Booster and Shinespark ability.

In Ferenia, while looking at a Chozo mural, Samus is stunned and then E.M.M.I.-06WB breaks through the mirror and grabs Samus by her arms. It is soon after deactivated by Quiet Robe. This E.M.M.I. has faceplates and it’s purple. Later, when Quiet Robe X reactivated the remaining E.M.M.I., Samus encountered E.M.M.I.-05IM in Ghavoran. This E.M.M.I. appears the same as the past E.M.M.I. (with the exception of E.M.M.I.-01P) but it’s blue. It also has the ability to freeze things. After the E.M.M.I. is destroyed, Samus gains Ice Missiles. Samus once again encounter -06WB in Ferenia. -06WB has the ability to see through walls and fire energy to stun Samus. After -06WB is destroyed, Samus gains the Wave Beam. Finally, in Hanubia, Samus encounters E.M.M.I.-07PB. This E.M.M.I. appears the same as past E.M.M.I. (with the exception of -01P) but it’s red. When Samus enters the E.M.M.I. Zone, she is detected by -07PB. It releases a huge blast of explosive energy, it severely damages the room and knocking Samus down. The E.M.M.I. entered the room and just as it was about to extract Samus’ Metroid DNA, Samus uses her Metroid power to absorb the energy from the E.M.M.I. and in the process killing its Central Unit.
