Light Crystal

From Metroid Wiki

Light Crystals are light-emitting minerals that provide a spherical field of light in Dark Aether. The orb of protective light - known as a Safe Zone - nullifies the corrosive effects of Dark Aether's atmosphere and replenishes Samus's health one unit per second she remains in the light. The Luminoth distributed the crystals in order to penetrate deeper into Dark Aether during their war against the Ing. Unlike the otherwise similar Light Beacons, which emit a temporary asylum when activated, Light Crystals are permanent fixtures.[1]

Charged Crystals[edit | edit source]

Light Crystals can be charged with different energies in order to enhance their protective powers. Samus can use her various beams to change the properties of the crystals.

Energized Crystal[edit | edit source]

When shot with the Light Beam, the Crystals become lethal to Ing that step within the Crystal's light. The effect lasts only a short time, and does not replenish Samus's health any faster than the neutral Light Crystal.[2]

Super Crystal[edit | edit source]

A Super Crystal.

Samus may use her Annihilator Beam to charge the crystals. In this state, crystal light not only becomes lethal to the Ing, but also attracts them towards the dark energy. Supercharging the crystals with the Annihilator Beam is an easy way to deal with the tougher Warrior Ing and the Hunter Ing. Darklings are still harmed by the supercharged light, but are not attracted to it. The effect lasts only a short time, and does not replenish Samus's health any faster than the neutral light crystal.[3]

Nullified Crystal[edit | edit source]

When shot with dark energy, the Light Crystal temporarily loses its effect. Samus may nullify a Crystal herself with a blast from the Dark Beam. The nullification may be reversed with a shot from either the Light or Annihilator Beams, or with a charged shot from the Power Beam. Crystals nullified by Amorbis cannot be recharged by Samus; her attempts will simply ricochet off the dark energy.[4]

Light Beacons[edit | edit source]

A Light Beacon.

Light Beacons are temporary light-emitting orbs that must be shot before they are activated. They were created when the war became critical and Light Crystals were in short supply and, while easier to make, are more unstable. Beacons respond to Samus's weapons in the same way a Light Crystal does. Beacons must be energized by Beam weapon fire occasionally, lest they revert to their inactive stasis.[5]

Energized Beacon[edit | edit source]

Light Beacons can be energized with the Light Beam, becoming lethal to Ing warriors. The effect will wear off after a short period of time and the Beacon will deactivate.[6]

Super Beacon[edit | edit source]

A Super Beacon.

Light Beacons can be energized with the Annihilator Beam for an especially deadly temporary effect. Ing are actually drawn to these fields by the aura of dark energy, but contact with the powerful light energy is fatal to them. After a short period of time the Beacon will deactivate.[7]

Nullified Beacon[edit | edit source]

When charged with dark energy, Beacons cease to function for a brief time. Some dark creatures will use dark energy in this manner to hinder their opponents, but Samus can use her Dark Beam to nullify them herself if she wishes.[8]

Logbook Data[edit | edit source]

Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Light Crystal
First Location: Dark Aether
Light Crystals provide protection from Dark Aether's atmosphere. They can be nullified by dark energy, or super charged by light energy. They were created by the Luminoth during the war with the Ing, and many still remain in use. Dark creatures despise the Crystals: some are injured or killed by the field they create.[9]

Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Energized Crystal
First Location: Dark Aether
Energized Crystals provide better protection from Dark Aether's denizens. Dark creatures are damaged or killed by the energized field. Some are killed on contact. The extra protection is not unlimited, and must be recharged by the Light Beam to remain in effect.[10]

Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Nullified Crystal
First Location: Dark Aether
Light Crystals, when covered with dark energy, cease to function for a short time. Light energy can clear the Crystal of the dark energy. Some dark creatures will fire dark energy at Light Crystals to hinder or damage their opponents.[11]

Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Super Crystal
First Location: Dark Aether
When charged with light and dark energy at once, the Crystal becomes a beacon to the Ing. They are compelled to approach it, despite the deadly field of energy it emits.[12]

Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Light Beacon
First Location: Dark Aether
Light Beacons must be energized by Beam weapon fire to function, and remain charged for a limited time. The Beacons were created when the Luminoth ran short of Light Crystals during the war. While simpler to make, the Beacons were also unstable. They had to be energized periodically, and could run out of energy at critical moments. Still, any protection was better than none for the Luminoth warriors.[13]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • On several occasions there exists an orb of light with no visible source. These protected areas usually envelope elevator shafts or important items like the Dark Temple Keys. One notable instance occurs in the Battlegrounds room in Dark Agon Wastes. The safe zone rests in the middle of the room, surrounding one of the Dark Agon Temple Keys. Even after the Ing snatch the Key, the light remains.
  • Safe zones can take cylindrical forms as well. The light generally takes this shape on elevator shafts and Morph Ball elevators.
