The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld video game console made by Nintendo and released in 2011. Like its predecessor, the Nintendo DS, it features a dual-screen layout, with the lower one being a touch screen. The top screen features glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. Two Metroid games were released for the Nintendo 3DS: Metroid Prime: Federation Force in 2016 and Metroid: Samus Returns in 2017. The Nintendo 3DS is also backward compatible with Nintendo DS games.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS features content from the Metroid series. Additionally, Metroid, Metroid II: Return of Samus, and Super Metroid were released for the 3DS Virtual Console from 2011 to 2016, and Metroid Fusion was distributed for free to early adopters of the console in 2011.
Five revisions of the Nintendo 3DS were released: the Nintendo 3DS XL in 2012, the Nintendo 2DS in 2013, the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL in 2014, and the New Nintendo 2DS XL in 2017. The Nintendo 3DS was succeeded by the Nintendo Switch in 2017.
