Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is the tenth installment in the Metroid series and the final game of the Metroid Prime series. The game was developed by Retro Studios and released for the Wii in 2007 and Japan in 2008. Corruption is the fifth game in the Metroid timeline and takes place six months after the events of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Tallon Metroids are a variation of Metroid that developed naturally on Tallon IV. There are multiple differences between these and regular Metroids, which stem from developing on different planets. Unused design notes indicate that this environmental versatility is due to a Metroid's ability to adapt to survive in differing atmospheric and gravitational conditions, and varying gamma radiation levels. Portals are dimensional anomalies from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. They are found on Aether and Dark Aether and act as gateways between the two dimensions. Most of them were created when a Leviathan struck the surface of Aether, creating its dark twin. Samus often uses them to travel from Aether to Dark Aether and vice versa while on her quest to save the Luminoth, making them extremely important.
The Portals were created when a Leviathan struck the surface of Aether and sent the planet into a state of Transdimensional Flux. The division of Aether into two dimensions caused several spatial rifts between it and Dark Aether, through which the Ing began to travel, eventually leading to war.
