Category talk:Bosses

From Metroid Wiki

Revamp[edit source]

I think this category would work better if it was grouped into subcategories consisting of "Category:[game name] Bosses" instead of just having every boss in this one big category. Also, it'd be nice if we had some clearer standards for what exactly a Mini-boss is, since that term seems to be used rather loosely at the moment. I completely agree on both counts. Subcategories by game would be great, and I have no idea what officially constitutes a mini-boss right now. Echoes does have a "subguardian" category in the logbook but that leaves out several boss-like encounters, such as the Alpha Splinter, the Alpha Blogg, and the Caretaker Class Drone. Prime lumps everything together under "creatures" which is rather unhelpful. I guess it's one of those things that we're categorizing by feel at the moment, as indicated by our parameters on the Category:Mini-boss page: "bosses of lesser significance or difficulty." It does makes sense, but I'm not entirely happy with it. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 22:31, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Echoes does have that handy category in the logbook, so it would be optimal to place all the Sub Guardians or none at all in the Mini-boss category. The rest are pretty much subjective, I guess. We could include Super Metroid bosses that don't show up on the Golden Statue, things like that, based on what makes sense. I would like to say that if an enemy becomes very common later on after it is fought as a Mini-boss, I'd like to exclude them from this category. This would remove Plated Beetle (pushover once you have actual weapons) and "Jolly Roger" Drone (mimics the Ram War Wasp's pattern once near the very beginning of the game, but doesn't do much else out of the ordinary the vast majority of the time). I'd also like to remove Steambot since they're really just cannon fodder that you're forced to kill before fighting the real Mini-boss, Steamlord. Other than that, I don't really have any suggested additions or subtractions, so long as we're clear on what we want and don't want in this category in the future. I agree with most of that, though I can't speak for the Corruption enemies you mentioned (haven't beaten it). But as for the Plated Beetle... I know what you mean about it being a common enemy for most of the game, but I think too many people would disagree if we removed it. It's definitely a one-time miniboss, in my opinion. It has its own cutscene, even, and protects a critical item. I guess it kind of reminds me of Iron Knuckles or Darknuts from the Zelda series. They are encountered as regular enemies later in the game but are also used as minibosses early on. You know, while they still seem scary. Of course, if a majority wishes to remove the Plated Beetle I won't object. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 18:59, 18 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I can concede the Plated Beetle, since while it does appear a good deal on a normal playthrough, I believe it's only one room, and it's a fairly major enemy in the Chozo Ruins. But anyway, this seems pretty clear-cut, so I'd like to get to swapping the categories before it gets forgotten. Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 21:17, 18 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Now that I think about it, it's also a bit of a conundrum what exactly to do for the cases like Alpha Blogg where it's pretty obviously considered a boss, but it's also pretty obviously considered a boss of lesser significance compared to the rest of the bosses in the game. My gut instinct tells me to just stick it in both categories and cover every base, but I'm not sure whether that'll work too well or not. Besides, most of the mini-boss articles right now use the boss infobox anyway, so they're already in the greater bosses category as things stand right now. Alright, the articles have all been recategorized now. Chances are good that recategorizing the images will wind up being part of the larger image categorization thing that has been going on for forever, so whenever that starts happening will likely be when those are fixed. If anyone has any suggestions or improvements on the (hopefully coherent) system I seem to have implemented, by all means, please share, since I'm sure this is imperfect at best. It looks amazing! I doff my cap to you sir! ;] Embyr 75  --Talk-- 18:08, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm impressed, much more organized that it was before. MKMetroid mf Sprite.gif 16:53, 24 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm glad you like it. I really prefer having it organized both by in-series categories (such as boss prominence/difficulty) and by which game it appears in and often by where in the universe the boss lives. I'd like to give more categories this treatment, but since it's such a large issue, it's likely going to be a bit-by-bit process, and there's probably going to be several other issues connected to whatever is changed. And then there's the whole issue of actually improving the content on these pages as well. But if this works as well as it seems to, it looks like this would be handy on other types of categories as well, so I guess I'll probably work on that when I have spare editing time.
