Metroid Prime: Federation Force is a spinoff Metroid game released in 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS. Federation Force is a multiplayer spinoff game and focuses primarily on a team of Galactic Federation Marines as they complete a variety of missions. The game comes bundled with Metroid Prime: Blast Ball, a 3-on-3 sci-fi sport in the Metroid universe.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The story takes place across three major planets, following a team of Federation Marines, and takes place between the events of Metroid II: Return of Samus and Super Metroid.[1] Metroids and Samus Aran make appearances.[2][3]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

The game consists of three modes: An unnamed singe-player mode and two multiplayer modes: Federation Force and Blast Ball.

Federation Force takes place on three major planets, each offering about 10 missions.[4] The gameplay is more action than exploration oriented, reminiscent of the Metroid Prime Hunters style gameplay.[5] There is no scanning mechanic.[6] Players move around in Mechs that are outfitted with different abilities, at the player's discretion, before each mission, creating a mechanic similar to role-playing game classes.[7]

Reception[edit | edit source]

Upon its reveal at E3 2015, it caused fan outcry, due to the five-year wait since Metroid: Other M, which received mixed reivews by critics and fans alike, as fans assumed the game lacked any form of singeplayer mode, Metroids, or Samus. This was proven false by the producer, Kensuke Tanabe. When the game was first revealed, a petition began on Change.org. Within 24 hours, it had 7,500 signatures.[citation needed]

  2. "Totilo: Are there Metroids in the game?
Tanabe: Would you rather know that now?
Totilo: If you don’t mind telling me, yeah. But if you don’t want to say, you don’t have to say.
Tanabe: [laughs] You will be able to see them. There’s a certain mission.

  4. "Tanabe: First off, we have three major planets. There will be, roughly, 10 different missions on each planet. It will be a way for you to go between those three planets on and off going through an adventure." Everything We Could Find Out About That New Metroid Game, Kotaku
  5. "Totilo: And is it more of an action game? If we think Metroid Prime, I think exploration. If I think Metroid Prime Hunters, I think more action, going around shooting.
Tanabe: In that way, I think it is closer to Hunters. There are obviously areas for you to look around and explore as well. Hunters focused more on the shooting portion. In this game you’ll be able to have other types of things you can experience throughout the gameplay.

  6. "Totilo: Okay. Are you scanning things? Is there that kind of part of Metroid Prime?
Tanabe: There’s no scanning aspects in this game.

  7. "When I asked him to share more info about the game, he started talking about role-playing game classes and how, in this game, he wants players to define their own roles. See, players in the main mode will be moving around in mechs that are outfitted before each mission. Players can choose to be more of a “healer” by equipping repair capsules. Others might arm their mech with super missiles. Power-ups have weight, so players will have to balance what they carry." Everything We Could Find Out About That New Metroid Game, Kotaku
