The mysterious ship, whose driver hopes to chase down Samus

For those who have played through all the nooks and crannies of Corruption and completed the lengthy feat of collecting the one hundred suit expansions available have likely seen a lasting image in Metroid Prime's history. Upon a 100% clearing of the game, a common Metroid goal, the player is left with an ambiguous ending: a Mysterious Ship follows Samus's gunship as she exits the current galaxy. About this unknown ship, various theories have risen; the main speculation caused by this extremely shady appearance is the fact that there may be a Metroid Prime 4 explaining this appearance. No other media flags have pointed to such a fact. In fact, Retro Studios announced a break from Metroid activity, signifying the exact opposite. Whether or not there will be a fourth Metroid Prime (something I would love to happen), it is still very fun to speculate on the whereabouts of this ending and Mysterious Ship.

Sylux's Ship[edit source]

The Delano 7 in Hunters

There are two plausible theories I have ingested based on this ship's sudden appearance. The first of these is that this ship is in fact Sylux's ship, the Delano 7. Now, for those not knowing of the Prime series' spin-off, Metroid Prime Hunters, Sylux is a blue-armored bounty hunter shrouded with just about as much mystery as this mystery ship's appearance. What is known about the bounty hunter is that it (he or she, Sylux has always been carefully gender ambiguous) holds a strong grudge against Samus Aran and the Federation. He also uses stolen Federation technology, possibly where the ship originated. Such feelings further the plausibility that the unknown ship was in fact Sylux's. Sylux's sly and crafty demeanor appear to be reflected behind this ship.

Besides behavioral similarities, the main evidence by which this theory hangs is the stunning similarity between the two ships. Keeping in mind that Hunters was not developed by Prime's Retro Studios, the two ships are conceptually similar. Aside from the different styles, such as darker tones for Hunters or more smooth shapes for the Wii to handle in Corruption, the two ships are not so different. Both manage to keep a blue and green color scheme: particularly a blue shape with neon green accents. While the green is only visible in the cracks of the Mysterious Ship, it should be noted that when the engines release exhaust flames near entering hyperspeed they release a green flame. Aside from chromatic similarities, the overall "X-shape" of the ship is kept in both ships. In terms of the two major theories, the theory that the ship belongs to Sylux is most plausible to me.

Dark Samus's Ship[edit source]

The second plausible theory created by fans is that the ship belongs to a star of the Prime series, the Phazon child Dark Samus. While I do not find this theory nearly as plausible as the first, I find it an honorable mention due to the persistence between certain groups of fans preferring this theory. The basic idea here is that the entity Dark Samus has once again reformed postmortem and is following Samus within a Phazon-based ship of her own. The main evidence to fortify this claim is the fact that Dark Samus is resilient, she is a star of the Prime series and cannot be destroyed until the series reaches full closure. This paired with the vague resemblance between her helmet and our secretive ship. Basically, the idea is that there cannot be an ample Prime 4 without Dark Samus or Phazon. What makes this most plausible is that although Phaaze was destroyed, it is possible that Dark Samus reformed from Phazon particles as the planet crumbled and escaped the explosion in her ship.

I do not like this theory because it contains many holes. Firstly, Phaaze was extremely distant from Elysia, the planet which Samus's ship and the Mysterious Ship are seen exiting from. Dark Samus reaching Elysia would mean that she was warped along with the rest of the Galactic Federation fleet undetected. Such a feat would be extremely difficult, but not completely impossible for the gal in black. Also though, the secret-ending ship doesn't seem to conform with other "Phazon standards". Lifeforms and structures around Phaaze were all organic-looking and had an easily recognizable feel to them. That is, any piece of Phaaze could be pulled out of its environment and it would still look like Phazon. This ship, however, doesn't emit the same aura that Phazon does. All in all, this theory simply doesn't cut it for me. However, I would most definitely enjoy for a Retro-made Metroid Prime 4 to prove me wrong. The true whereabouts may never be known. This could be another teaser shot to the public and forgotten later. Or, like most often the case as a Metroid fan, we'll simply have to wait and find out what happens next.
