Power Bombs are the one of the ultimate weapons in the Metroid series. They are a heavily upgraded version of standard Bombs, creating a large superheated explosion that can incinerate organic matter instantaneously (including Metroids), and destroy Bendezium and Denzium alloy. They were first featured in Super Metroid, and have appeared in Metroid: Zero Mission, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Metroid: Other M. The number of Power Bombs held at once can be expanded with Power Bomb Expansions, with the exception of Other M, in where the number of usable Power Bombs is limitless. This weapon is the most powerful conventional weapon in each game in which it appears.
Metroid: Zero Mission
The Power Bombs appear chronologically first during Samus's Zero Mission. After retrieving the Legendary Power Suit, Samus makes her way back to the Space Pirate Mother Ship. Shortly before reaching Mecha Ridley, Samus obtains the Power Bombs. They are not necessary to reach Mecha Ridley, as there is a secret passage above that allows Samus to completely skip them. They can also be used to leave the Mother Ship and return to Brinstar. They can be used to open Yellow Hatches and break Power Bomb Blocks.
Samus should have obtained the Power Bombs from a Chozo Statue immediately upon exiting Ridley; however, Space Pirates appear to have stolen the Power Bomb upgrade and broken the statue. They later place the Power Bomb in another statue in the Chozo Ruins section of Chozodia.
Metroid Prime brought back Power Bombs as a weapon to destroy walls and rubble made of Bendezium. They are a one-hit kill to Metroids and most other common enemies. They are found in Phazon Mines. Through sequence breaking used to obtain Power Bombs early, Samus can kill critical bosses much more quickly.
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Power Bombs function in much the same as they did in Prime in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. They are used to destroy Denzium. They are obtained after defeating the Power Bomb Guardian underneath Torvus Bog. Unused combinations for the Power Bomb upgrade include the Light Bombs, Dark Bombs, and Annihilator Bombs.
In their first appearance in Super Metroid, Power Bombs are used to destroy walls and enemies, as well as open Orange Doors. Power Bombs are used to activate the Crystal Flash technique. Power Bombs cause Samus to Bomb Jump as if she had used a Morph Ball Bomb. Like other 2D appearances, Power Bombs are especially useful in finding other types of weak blocks and secret passages.
Metroid: Other M
The Power Bomb reappears in Metroid: Other M. It is tested by Samus along with her other weapons very early in the game. However, once Samus on the Bottle Ship, Adam Malkovich lets Samus know that he has no intention of authorizing the use of Power Bombs because their blast radius is extensive, and they are powerful enough to incinerate organic matter. This appearance is the only appearance in which the Power Bomb does not require ammunition of any sort. She must charge a regular Bomb while in Morph Ball mode then release while the charge gauge is full. The time it takes to charge can be lessened through the acquisition of Accel Charges. However, Samus must wait to use a successive Power Bomb. She does not use Power Bombs until one of her final battles, the Queen Metroid battle (curiously, she is not notified that she is able to use Power Bombs in this situation). After that battle and the confrontation with MB, Samus is free to use the Power Bomb.
