NIWA[edit source]
Shouldn't we add something about the NIWA here? - ZeldaMan (PostboxStatus) 14:02, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
- 'Tis Done. Interwiki linking and more NIWA implementation are still to come though. :) -Melchizedek talk 23:05, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Categories on the Main Page[edit source]
Active editors and Metroid fans. On the main navigation bar of the main page there is room for 8 categories, which are alreay filled up with 'Games', 'Enemies', 'Spacecrafts' etc: Which categories do you guys think should be there? Ones that are significant to Metroid and are coming along strongly here at the wiki would be the obvious choices. -Melchizedek talk 23:11, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Most of the categories on the main page sound good, I would recommend replacing the Power Suit category with the Suits category though. I'd also recommend the weapons category for the main page. Metroidking 23:17, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Have changed 'Power Suits' to 'Suits'. Which one would you suggest to remove if weapons was to be added?-Melchizedek talk 23:21, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Let's call them 'Featured categories'. ;)-Melchizedek talk 23:37, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- OK. I also created a technology category and placed weapons, space ships, and suits inside it. You can put that on the main page instead. I am sorry I didn't think about this until now. Metroidking 23:42, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- So that would lead to removing two and adding one, so we'd need another new one. But, I think technology might be a bit blaze for up there. Do people really know what they're wanting in technology, compared to a weapons, suits or spacecrafts category? It doesn't seem specific enough to me. -Melchizedek talk 23:49, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- You have a point on that one. To answer you question about which one to replace with weapons then, I'd say Substances. Metroidking 23:53, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds good. Substances always seemed a bit odd to me. Main page is looking much better now. :)-Melchizedek talk 23:56, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- I'm thinking the Technology category is enough for that. There's no need to have unnecessary categories, especially since they're a mess now lol. --Malake256 {Talk | Contribs} 00:35, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- We originally had the vehicles category there instead of the spacecrafts one. I'm rather indifferent either way myself. -Melchizedek talk 00:42, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- I guess I wasn't here then. No need to change, in this case. - ZeldaMan (PostboxStatus) 00:53, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, that was pretty early on. The categories on the main page are much better than they were now. -Melchizedek talk 01:03, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
The bar near the top of Zelda Wiki's main page that links to all the different games in the series gave me this idea; I think it'd be pretty helpful here, as well. I already have images that could work for it; if you want, I can make a preliminary version and we can see how it looks. PeanutLord 14:12, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- We're trying to make something like that too. Our first attempt did not go so well. I don't remember the order we were going to put the games in, but if you want to make a preliminary version here, that would be great. Here are the images to use: File:M1template.png (Metroid)
File:M2template.png ((Metroid II: Return of Samus)
File:M3template.png (Super Metroid)
File:M4template.png (Metroid Fusion)
File:M5template.png (Metroid: Zero Mission)
File:MOMtemplate.png (Metroid: Other M}
File:M6template.png (Metroid Prime)
File:M7template.png (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes)
File:M8template.png (Metroid Prime Hunters)
File:M9template.png (Metroid Prime 3: Corruption)
For now, just put it in the order of those images. Hopefully you can make a better one than our first attempt. MK 18:25, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- There is something like this already in development, so it's only a matter of time before you see it launched on the main page. -Melchizedek talk 21:43, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- How does that look? I stopped at Fusion because the rest of the images have a bunch of blank space around them, and I'm not sure how I can work around that just yet. Can I make some suggestions for the ones I already have up, though? One of the things that makes working with them difficult is that none of them are a perfect circle or a uniform size, which is going to make the final version of the navigation bar look a bit unorganized. May I upload images for the games that I've already made for this purpose? You don't have to use them in the final version of the bar, but I think they'd be at least helpful for ironing out the problems with it. PeanutLord 22:06, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- I was the one fixing the images but i got kinda busy, still am. If you're any good at image editing, it'd be nice if you could fix the images, if not, well it's up to me then. And it's still very early, i'm not liking the style i added to the images, but the actual navigation template will be something that simple. --Malake256 {Talk | Contribs} 23:50, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'm competent at image editing, but not fantastic; most of my expertise lies in the technical aspect of the matter. That said, I'd be glad to help in any way that I can. You can check out the images I've made for this here; password is "metroids". If you think they're suitable, I'll go ahead and whip up a navigation bar for them (though if you want the glossy effect I've noticed you had for the originals, I can try to apply that to them). PeanutLord 00:45, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- We're debating around on the image styles, if you wanna join the chat, join Metroid Wiki's skype chat. Completely free and much easier to communicate. And no, we don't actually call, just IM. Ur pics are good btw, except that the letters get unreadable at some points, bt nothing that isn't easily fixed. And, to me, i'd like more variety, like not always orange helmeted samus. For example, zero suit face on ZM. --Malake256 {Talk | Contribs} 01:35, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- All right, then. Skype username is peanutlord816, and I'll work on fixing up the images. PeanutLord 01:50, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- Ours will be quite different from Zelda Wiki's, but serve the same basic function. It may not be a bar as such, but another box. If our SEO permits, hopefully it will replace the "Welcome" Box. Also, not only will it have links to the games, but also to key articles (such as Samus Aran), a link to our Facebook group, and a link to our Skype page. As you can tell, the reason it is yet to go up is because of the effort that will have to go into it. So hold tight guys. -Melchizedek talk 11:18, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Thought it'd be worth a mention.[edit source]
Look at this link. I figured it might be worth a mention somewhere on this wiki, if not then oh well. 173.25.35.113 21:06, 5 April 2011 (EDT)
- A mention? That is worth a Nobel prize! Have you seen the Haloid video? Findow 11:07, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
- This is a good video. And it was a good choice of posting on in this talk page GOOD JOB!--Arcwarioman 16:26, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Countdown[edit source]
Just out of curiosity, is anything "exciting" scheduled for when the countdown ends, or do we just say "Happy Birthday, Metroid?" (not that there's anything wrong with that) Metroid4Ever 01:10, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's definitely something we've been talking about. I certainly wouldn't want Metroid Wiki to look lazy :] I'm hoping the main page will scream anniversary for one. And I'll see if I can write an article by then. I've been getting more and more busy wiki-wise.. but 25th anniversary quickly moved it's way to the top of my priority list. Of course, you're welcome to suggest anything, as is anyone. Anything helps. Sammy's all grown up :'( --Malake256 {Talk | Contribs} 05:52, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- I was thinking that maybe some sort of inspiration would hit the entire wiki and suddenly we'd have no stubs or red links... I'd like to have some sort of 25th anniversary thing from Nintendo to buy, play, and write about, but that doesn't seem like it will be happening (which is a shame because they did a great job with Mario and Zelda). Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 11:38, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- I think that if Nintendo was going to do something, we'd know about it by now (if putting Fusion on the list of GBA games coming to the 3DS eShop isn't it), though it is possible that they could celebrate it late. Who knows? As for ideas, I suppose we could link or embed a video of this guy. He plays ocarina and is planning to do something for Metroid's 25th. I don't know about getting rid of all stubs or red links, but I'll do what I can...maybe we'll get lucky and at least have more users contributing regularly. Metroid4Ever 14:59, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- I've got a pretty good idea actually. I was thinking on announcing the coolest fan Metroid's 25ths celebrations in our news section. But now that I think about it, it may be even better to dedicate a little section to Metroid's 25th celebrations. So pretty much announcing any thing and anyone that celebrates metroid, like that guy playing the ocarina. Like archiving Metroid celebrations. We'd get a collection of Metroid celebrations and they'd probably appreciate the link too. --Malake256 {Talk | Contribs} 16:14, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- That sounds like a good idea. I'm excited already. Metroid4Ever 17:18, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- The section on the main page sounds like a good idea. What I'm saying is that as a wiki, we don't have something big planned; personally, I think that playing through all the games I own multiple times and going on an anti-stub crusade for boss articles within the Prime series is my way of celebrating. Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 17:32, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- Haha, that does sound like fun :D I've always wanted to write those boss articles.. something ALWAYS gets in the way >:[ --Malake256 {Talk | Contribs} 17:45, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

I am literally playing through the game and then destubbing the boss article later the same day, so it provides a good deal of info ;) I'm basically getting a good excuse to savor the experience lol. Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 18:45, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Featured Content[edit source]
So I know I've been dropping hints about this hither and thither, but I'd like to open it for discussion here: Featured content.
At the moment, we have 1 featured article and 1 featured image at a time, and previous features go into an archive. Reasons I don't like this: 1) It puts pressure on the users to nominate a new article/image just for the sake of having new featured content, possibly at the cost of the actual quality of the items nominated. 2) There's no way to be sure for how long an image/article will stay on the main page, potentially leaving the main page looking stale over time.
I'd like to propose rotation of images/articles on either a weekly, monthly, or completely random timetable (different every time to refresh the page). I actually like having a new image and article every time I visit the main page: it keeps the main page fresh and attracts new user attention. I have a string of possible featured content pages on a nav in my sandbox that was stolen "inspired" by ZW's current featured nav. =P
Would everyone please take a moment to voice their opinions and present options? Thanks!!! —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 00:11, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
- Personally, I've always liked the MarioWiki philosophy of rotating the featured articles on a weekly basis. However, given that we have three featured articles currently, I think a randomized or perhaps rotating within the week strategy would be the most effective here. Obviously, the easiest way to fix this would be to have more featured content, but I could only think of one, maybe two articles that deserve to be elevated over the rest in terms of going above and beyond standard article quality. As for the nav on your sandbox, I think it would work quite well, and would help with navigation greatly, so I support that. Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 00:53, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
- Weekly sounds good to me. Anyone else have input to offer?
- Also, I was looking at the "Remember Me?" section. I've always loved the Remember Me idea but I'm wondering if that's limited in how much that can grow. Maybe we can encourage WikiExclusive-type articles and the "Remember Me?" articles can become a series of WikiExclusives to be displayed in that same space? It just makes that section of the Main Page seem more flexible for future growth, to me. Ideas on that also? —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 05:43, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
I think you're copying a lot of things from Zelda WikiI like it, and it seems to achieve the desired effect, so no problems there. Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 12:53, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
- I would like to stray away from being too similar to Zelda Wiki, however yes we do need a better way of rotating our featured content. Bob1996's suggestion of weekly rotations sounds fine to me, but I think that would work better once we get more featured articles (say a total of 4-5 articles that way there won't be any repeats in a month). Images I think we may could do something with Template:Tab so that users can toggle through multiple featured images. MK 16:50, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
- True, we don't want to be completely Zelda Wiki-esque. Actually I had forgotten that tab suggestion, I really like the idea that a user can toggle (at least for now, since we have a small amount of featured content) through images/articles. It's unique. That's something I'd like to see implemented soon. What kind of timetable are we looking at, do you think? As for the Wikiexclusive idea, I never really noticed that ZW was the only one that did that lol. Does anyone else have some ideas as to how we can expand the "Remember Me?" space to be more sustainable? —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 17:51, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
- I assume it's now on our list of "things we've agreed to do but never really gotten around to finishing completely in a way that any objective outsider would be able to tell whether we had finished it or not", so it should be finished sometime soon if we stay on target. For the featured article rotation, we'd only technically need four to work something out, although getting around to featuring another article is another matter entirely... For the Wiki Exclusives, I'm really not sure what exactly we'd write about outside of things that fall under something that "Remember Me?" covered. Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects)
- Yeah, I'm not fond of that list... ;) As for topics to be covered in Wiki Exclusives, you can really go all out on those. For example, I'd probably be tempted, if we ever did Wiki Exclusives here, to write about the theoretical physics of interdimensional travel through Aetherian portals. ;) It's all up to the user's imagination, in that case. —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 19:42, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
- Well then, I support the idea of having our own Wiki Exclusives, if only to see a one-thousand word article on the significance of Luminoth society in the rest of the series =P Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 19:51, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
Bump! So times have changed a little since October. We have multiple Articles and Pictures up for nomination, and we've reached 1,500 articles overall. To summarize the conversation above, the discussion suggests:
- Coming up with some sort of rotation schedule for featured content
- Finding a way to make "Remember Me?" more sustainable
As for the featured content, ideas included:
- Rotating on a by-visit, weekly, or monthly schedule
- Creating a tabbed template for the main page, giving users the ability to toggle through articles/images
The only suggestion for expanding the "Remember Me?" section was:
- Allow inclusion of any editor-original topic related to Metroid, turning the current "Remember Me?" articles into a series within the Wiki Exclusive umbrella.
I thought we could focus on just the featured content rotation. Anyone care to open this topic up again (and possibly accomplish something this time? XD)? —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 20:28, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- I thought that we were leaning toward rotating it weekly after getting a new FA, but that hasn't happened due to the fact that we still haven't gotten a new FA since due to the slowed-down voting on most of our nominations. Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 20:41, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- It's true, we haven't gotten a new FA. And I don't know when we will. Which is why I'm leaning towards: Let's just implement the thing, however we choose to do so, and if it's going to be weekly then let's have it rotate weekly for three weeks. It won't work out to a perfect month, but I doubt anyone will notice. —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 23:42, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- I agree to that, since it's our biggest possible improvement over what we currently have (which is still Tallon Metroid ever since we passed that way back last summer). Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 01:31, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- BUMP! Until we come up with something better, I've implemented a temporary Tabbed template for the features on the main page. —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 06:16, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
- Implemented a Tabbed template for featured pictures as well. —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 23:48, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Spammers[edit source]
Lately, I've been noticing a lot of counterfeit users who are obviously vandalizing this wiki. I know the rest of you guys know, but we need to think of a solution to this issue. --Wookiee123 04:54, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
- The antispam measures we've used in the past work for a while, however the spammers eventually find their way around it. There are a number of other antispam extensions that I'll ask Prod about, hopefully one of them will have good results if installed. MK 07:09, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
- In short, spammers don't really bother the wiki as much as they'd like to think. Hardcore vandals, now those guys can be a little more pesky. Then again, I think I'd rather deal with vandals, they're a lot funnier than "GET YOUR WAFFLES AT LINK X.COM!!!" --Malake256 {Talk | Contribs} 08:32, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- Speaking of spammers, we need to find a way to keep them out, anyone seen the new user accounts lately? ITS CRAZY!!!! 6 Spammers in a day! we need to do something.--Arcwarioman 20:12, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
Videos[edit source]
Shouldnt be videos on most of our pages to up the level of quality? I mean like videos of room tours or trailers official and homemade for games or how to kill a creature. THAT will most likely have people visiting us would know what we are talking about and can see it at the same time. What do you all think of that?--Arcwarioman 15:15, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- Metroid Wiki has a youtube page where we often upload original footage of gameplay. This requires a capture card, however, and the people in charge of doing this haven't done so in a while. Things take time, I'm sure eventually we'll have decent footage of whatever we want! —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 15:55, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- OK Im just saying that we might need to consider that videos on more pages would help.....but that would also lead to videos that are spoilers.--Arcwarioman 16:20, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
F-Zero Wiki[edit source]
Have you guys heard! F-zero wiki has just been made!Im gonna sign up since I know F-Zero stuff!!!:D--Arcwarioman 19:17, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, it actually needs to be announced and added to the interwiki table by someone with the appropriate usergroups now that it's been announced publicly, tho. Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 19:29, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Looks like MK is taking care of it. Thanks for the heads up guys! —Embyr 75 --Talk-- 22:07, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- And now Icaruspedia too. Bop1996 (Talk | Unfinished projects) 01:41, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
