Metroids are feared parasitic organisms created by the Chozo, with the ability to leech the life energy from living organisms.  Metroids were later discovered on their home planet of SR388, by the Space Pirates, who soon began using them as powerful bio-weapons. As explained in the Metroid manga, they were originally created by the Chozo, to eliminate the other, more menacing parasitic organism native to SR388, known as the X.

Morphology
An adolescent Metroid's body is covered by a thick, translucent membrane and four, talon-shaped fangs. Metroids use two of their talons to attach itself to its prey, while using the smaller two to leech its prey's energy. Within the shell are three to five red spherically shaped organic objects, rested atop it's fangs, and connected to it's outer membrane via string-like tendons. However, aside from the Metroids' basic adolescent stage, it also is capable of entering four other, more mature stages of life, if, of course, the correct environmental prerequisites are met. These stages include the Infant Metroid, Alpha Metroid, Gamma Metroid, Zeta Metroid, and Omega Metroid. There are many variations of Metroids aside from those just mentioned including Phazon Metroids, Miniroids, Hunter Metroids, Fission Metroids, Hopping Metroids, Metroid Hatchers, and others.

There are many notable products of Metroids, including Samus Aran herself, since she was infused with Metroid DNA in order to survive X-Parasite invasion of her body. Other Main metroids are Queen Metroid, Metroid Prime, and Dark Samus the remnants of Metroid Prime.
History
:The Galactic Federation discovered the Metroid on SR388, several specimens were acquired for research. On the way back to headquaters, the Federation ship was ambushed by  Space Pirates. Recognizing the military potential, the Pirates took the Metroids to Zebes.

:The Federation then ordered Samus Aran to eradicate all Metroids on Zebes, a mission that she accomplished. Some time later the Federation ordered Samus to eradicate every Metroid on SR388. After destroying every Metroid in her path, she battled and destroyed the Queen Metroid. Another Metroid hatched shortly after the Queen was destroyed, Samus spared it and took it to researchers at Ceres Space Colony.

:Shortly after Samus left, the Space Pirates attacked the colony. Receiving a distress signal, Samus returned to the station and witnessed Ridley escape with the Hatchling. Returning to Zebes, there Samus encounter failed clones of Metroids that were far weaker. After making her way into the new Tourian, she destroyed the Metroids gathered there and eventually encountered the Hatchling, this time far larger. It drained Samus' energy leaving it at critical levels before it left. It reappeared again, just as Mother Brain was about to kill Samus and sacrificed itself to save her.

:Later Samus was on a mission to SR388, where she was attacked by an X that infected her, the Federation saved her with a vaccine made from Metroid DNA that had been acquired from the Hatchling. It allowed her to absorb any free-floating X but also made her inherit the Metroids' vulnerability to extreme cold. Shortly afterward she learned that the Federation had a Metroid breeding program aboard the X-infested Biological Space Laboratories. After moving the station in the path of SR388 in an attempt to eradicate all X aboard the station, before she could make it to her ship she was attacked by an Omega Metroid that was immune to all her weapons. Before the Metroid could finish Samus off, an X copy of Samus attacked the Metroid but was quickly defeated. Samus then absorbed the X regaining her Ice Beam ability that she used to destroy the Omega Metroid. After the station impacted SR388, the remaining Metroids aboard the station, possibly the last in the universe, were destroyed.

Life cycle
Most encountered Metroids are in the adolescent stage, only in select circumstances can they under go their natural life cycle

Adolescent Metroid
:The most commonly encountered form of Metroids are the adolescents. Adolescent Metroids' bodies are covered by a thick, translucent membrane and four talon-shaped claws. The outer claws are used to grip their prey while the inner claws drain the energy.

Alpha Metroid
:After molting, adolescents become Alpha Metroid. They are no longer capable of latching onto their prey, they instead attack by dive bombing.

* Featured in: Metroid II and Metroid Fusion

Gamma Metroid
:After further mutations Metroids grow larger and gain the ability to fire lighting bolts. Gamma Metroids will also ram their prey

* Featured in: Metroid II and Metroid Fusion

Zeta Metroid
:Zeta Metroids are even larger, they will fire projectiles and also resort to ramming.

Omega Metroid
:Omega Metroids are one of the most powerful forms of Metroids. They attack by firing projectiles as well as ramming.
The Omega Metroid that Samus encountered on the Biologic Space Laboratories' research station also attacked by slashing.

* Featured in: Metroid II and Metroid Fusion

Queen Metroid
Main article: Queen Metroid

:The Queen Metroid is the final stage in a normal Metroid's life cycle. It will attack by ramming, biting, and firing projectiles. Only one has been encountered by Samus.

* Featured in: Metroid II

Phazon Mutated Metroids
Tallon Metroid
:Tallon Metroids are similar to regular adolescent Metroids but are require less firepower to destroy. The Tallon Metroids encountered on Aether were red in appearance.

* Featured in: Metroid Prime (scanned as regular Metroids) and Metroid Prime 2

Infant Tallon Metroid
:Infant Tallon Metroids are capable of rapid growth by feeding directly on Phazon. They will only attack by ramming.

* Featured in: Metroid Prime 2

Dark Tallon Metroid
:Dark Tallon Metroids are Metroids taken over by the Ing, they attack in the same way as an adolescent Metroid.

* Featured in: Metroid Prime 2

Hunter Metroid
:Hunter Metroids are capable of draining their preys' energy at a distance due to an energy siphon tentacle. They may also attack by ramming.

* Featured in: Metroid Prime

Fission Metroid
Main article: Fission Metroid

:Fission Metroids are adolescent Metroids that are capable of splitting into multiple Metroids.

* Featured in: Metroid Prime

Metroid Prime
Main article: Metroid Prime

:Metroid Prime is a Metroid that has been extremely mutated by Phazon. It is far more powerful than a standard Metroid. It uses a variety of attacks.
