Missles are usually the first ballistic weapon in the Metroid series. Missles have been present in all Metroid games and are expected to be in the upcoming title, Metroid: Other M. In the Metroid Prime series the player could venture a little more than needed to access the weapon combinations. With these upgrades, Samus could shoot powerful missle and beam combos.

In Metroid Prime, the player could get the Super Missles by firing the Power Beam and missles at the same time. With the Wave Beam, Samus could shoot the Wavebuster, a continuous electric beam that would hit targets as long as they were locked on. With the use of the Ice Beam, the player could use the Ice Spreader. And with the Plasma Beam, Samus would shoot the Flame Thrower. The Flame Thrower fires a short-ranged, continuous stream of molten magma. All the upgrades required more than one missle to be used. (The Wavebuster and Flame Thrower required one missle per second to fire.)
