Samus Aran is an intergalactic Bounty Hunter and the main protagonist of the Metroid series. Her first appearance was in the original Metroid, released in 1986. Her birth planet is K-2L, an earth colony. Samus Aran is a bounty hunter of prestige fame, often employed by the Galactic Federation. Samus's history is somewhat mysterious and is often left with wide gaps. Her past is best described in the Metroid Manga, although Nintendo has never directly confirmed whether the manga is canon or non-canon; some images from the Manga appear in the Japanese Metroid: Zero Mission Gallery. Other than the Metroid Manga, primary sources for her history are Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Other M.

Before she reaches the Control Room, Samus is confronted by the SA-X. She manages to reduce it to its base X form, though it flees before she can absorb it. She reaches the docking bay, only to find her ship missing and an Omega Metroid waiting in its place. It attacks her, leaving her at the brink of death. Before it can kill her, however, the SA-X appears, assumes its Samus form, and attacks the Omega Metroid with its Ice Beam. The Omega Metroid damages it and permanently reduces it to its base form. Samus absorbs the SA-X, regains the Ice Beam, and brutally assaults the Omega Metroid with shots to its chest. It dies, Samus's ship returns, and she escapes the station just before it collides with SR388, obliterating both.

ZDR Incident
Metroid Dread
After an unknown amount of time, Samus receives a mission from the Federation. An X parasite was spotted on a planet known as ZDR, and Samus is tasked with investigating it after the Federation's Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier robots go missing. Samus lands on the planet, but quickly loses her abilities. She ends up deep in the planet's crust. As she explores the planet, attempting to get back to her ship, she encounters Quiet Robe, a Chozo. Quiet Robe informs Samus of the one responsible for the EMMI's disappearence, Raven Beak, who is attempting to get Samus's DNA with the EMMI robots. Unfortunately, Quiet Robe is killed shortly after this. Samus proceeds to explore more, regaining most of her lost abilities. While exploring, she accidentally releases the X Parasites from their containment, which causes them to take over the local ecosystem.

After this, she searches for Raven Beak, who she finally encounters. Raven Beak wants to use Samus's Metroid DNA to take over the galaxy, as he believes the Metroids are great weapons for achieving his plan. Samus, unknowningly becoming more Metroid, fights him, kills his X Parasite, thereby ending his plan and destroying ZDR in the process. She flies off, in search of a new mission. clear

Samus recruits Kirby to aid her in eliminating a swarm of Metroids. She gives Kirby a Heart Star if he freezes all of the Metroids with his Ice copy ability.
After defeating Yaridovich and retrieving the fifth Star Piece, if Mario and his friends return to the Mushroom Kingdom castle in Toad Town, they can find Samus lying on a bed, clad in her Power Suit, in one of the guest rooms. When interacted with, she will say: "...I'm resting up for Mother Brain".

Super Smash Bros. Series
Kirby's Dream Land 3
Samus has appeared in every installment of the Super Smash Bros. series. Her basic special attack is her Charge Beam, which she begins charging when the B button is pressed. She will finish charging when the B button is pressed again, or the beam is fully charged. This can then be fired by pressing B once more. She can fire Missiles, which can either home in on opponents, but with weak attack power, or speed them up, at the expense of their homing capabilities. She also has the ability to switch to Morph Ball form temporarily in order to drop Bombs. Bombs can be used to perform 'bomb jumps' in a similar manner as the Prime series. She uses her Morph Ball form for another attack, Screw Attack, which attacks opponents while jumping highly.  She also has a Grapple Beam, which can be used to grab opponents, or the edge of the stage, helping her chances of survival. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, she also gains the ability to switch between Power Suit and Zero Suit form via her Final Smash. For her Power Suit Final Smash, Zero Laser, she fires a massive full-power beam, which will (almost all the time) KO anyone in it's path, the power of which is so great it shatters her Power Suit, leaving her in Zero Suit form. The broken remnants of the Power Suit can then be picked up and thrown at opponents to cause a small amount of damage. To regain the Power Suit, Zero Suit Samus must utilize her Final Smash again.
Samus recruits Kirby to aid her in eliminating a swarm of Metroids. She gives Kirby a Heart Star if he freezes all of the Metroids with his Ice Copy Ability. The level that this is in appears to be a combination of Tourian and Norfair by design, and the fact that the Ice ability is required for the Heart Star is in reference to how the Metroids are extremely susceptible to cold in their early stages.

The broken remnants of the Power Suit can then be picked up and thrown at opponents to cause a small amount of damage. To regain the Power Suit, Zero Suit Samus must utilize her Final Smash again. She loses this ability in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, in which Samus appears as two different characters, one clad in her Power Suit and one in her Zero Suit.

Samus also has a major role in Brawls Subspace Emissary mode. She infiltrates the Research Facility in search of her Power Suit. During her search, she finds Pikachu being used as a power source, which appears to be physically painful. Samus rescues the Pokémon, which alerts the R.O.B.s stationed throughout the facility to her presence. She and Pikachu fight their way through the facility, eventually coming upon three Power Suit clones. They appear to be clad in the Gravity Suit and have glowing purple visors. The pair defeats the clones, and Samus regains her suit. Her victory is short-lived, however, as they soon encounter Ridley, who grabs Samus and scrapes her against the wall. Using its Thunder attack, Pikachu rescues the bounty hunter from the Pirate leader's clutches, and a battle ensues. After Ridley's defeat, Samus and Pikachu meet up with other heroes in the Subspace Bomb Factory, initiating the next part of the story. Samus is one of the characters who can travel through the Great Maze and fight Tabuu.

Trivia
*Though Samus is usually portrayed with blonde hair, in the original Metroid and on a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Samus is shown with brown hair.
*Samus Aran was named after Brazilian football player Edson Arantes do Nascimento, more famously known as Pelé. Developer Hiroji Kiyotake was a football fan and mistook Pelé's actual name as "Samus Arantes Nascimentos".<ref>{{cite person|quote=Akinori Sao: About 10 years ago when I did a magazine interview, I heard from Sakamoto-san that you’re a football fan and took that name from the real name of Pelé, the King of Football.<br />Hiroji Kiyotake: Yeah. *Though Samus is usually portrayed with blonde hair, in the original Metroid, Samus is depicted as a redhead. Within the same game, when using the Varia Suit as Justin Bailey, Samus has bright green hair. When using the Power Suit in Metroid (1986), Samus' is a brunette. In the Super Metroid Nintendo Power comic, Samus is depicted with lavender-colored hair. In Zebes Invasion Order, she is seen with dark black hair. In a colorized Metroid II, Samus has red hair.
*Samus is nicknamed "Sammy" by the hunter Gandrayda.
*Samus is nicknamed "Sammy" by the hunter Gandrayda.
*Samus made a brief appearance in the cartoon series MAD (TV series) episode Gaming's Next Top Princess. The series parodies many icons from pop culture and other recent modern events, with Gaming's Next Top Princess focusing on Nintendo females, parodying the television series America's Next Top Model. Samus, along with Princess Peach and Zelda were the three finalists in the America's Next Top Model challenge. Samus might have won, but they did not reveal it. The cameraman, a Lakitu from the Mario series, noted Samus looked stunning without her Power Suit. She was to have a modeling picture with Ridley but a few minutes later, she killed Ridley.
*The Zero Suit takes on several different forms throughout Metroid games. The first-ever depiction of the Zero Suit was in Metroid: Zero Mission, Samus' start as a freelance Bounty Hunter. The Zero Suit covers Samus completely from neck-to-toe in a cyan, skin-tight bodysuit with magenta Chozo sigils on her back, left breast, and the back of her left hand. Differences between the zero suits appear in Metroid: Zero Mission, Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid: Other M, and Metroid: Samus Returns. The Zero Suit has no canon name within any Metroid game.
