The Game Boy is a handheld video game console made by Nintendo and released in 1989. Metroid II: Return of Samus was released for the Game Boy in 1991.

The Game Boy features a four-color grayscale display. Two revisions of the original Game Boy were released: the smaller Game Boy Pocket in 1996 and the Game Boy Light, which features an electroluminescent backlight, in Japan only in 1998. The Game Boy was succeeded by the Game Boy Color in 1998 and the Game Boy Advance in 2001.
A Game Boy is a Nintendo-produced handheld console. This rectangular shaped handheld was the first of the Game Boy line. This 8-bit quality came early in video game productions, being released in Japan April 21, 1989 and July 31 that same year in North America. The Game Boy was a very low-detail, monochromatic game console, with only four shades of gray. Despite its limited visual capabilities, it was revolutionary for its time, managing to sell 118.69 million units worldwide (including the Game Boy Color).

Several Game Boy games, including Metroid II: Return of Samus, were re-released on the Virtual Console for the Nintendo 3DS.
