When Samus traverses the Void, it appears as a dense black and purple fog. Her body is deconstructed moments after entering the Void and rematerialized at the event horizon of the Portal at the destination dimension. Once Samus causes the collapse of the alternate dimensions, the Portals vanish and the Interdimensional Void becomes inaccessible.

A similar phenomenon occurs in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, though it is unclear whether or not it is the same void. Because Portals exist in Corruption (though very scarcely), some sort of void appears as well. When Samus traverses this void, her matter isn't scattered like portals in Aether. This implies that portals appearing in Bryyo and Pirate Homeworld are more direct than Aetherian Portals.
