In Metroid Prime, the Phazon Mines are only accessible through the sunken Space Pirate frigate in the Tallon Overworld. In the first several rooms, Phazon covers the rooms floors. Genetically altered space pirates work there such as pirates who are only affected by a certain one of your beams or the omega pirates which are twice the size of Samus. The Phazon mines is where Samus gets the Grapple Beam upgrade.
