Speed-runs are playthroughs of games that involve players finishing in the fastest time possible, often through the use of Sequence Breaking and glitches. Though not exclusive to the Metroid series, speed-runs are common practice among some players. In the 2D games, this is often due to the nonlinear gameplay of the games (with the exception of Metroid Fusion) and the reward of different endings depending on how quickly the game was completed.
Speed-runs are played in varying styles amongst players. Some of the most common practices are acquiring the lowest amount of items possible (often known as a low percentage run), which also greatly increases the difficulty of the game, collecting as many items as the player pleases, or collecting all items in the game.
