Thardus is an animated sentient stone creature charged with Phazon radiation. Samus encountered it in Phendrana Drifts' Quarantine Cave.

Battle

Thardus attacks by throwing large rocks, rolling, and by encasing objects in ice. The chaotic nature of Phazon caused weaknesses in Thardus structural integrity. At first Samus is unable to view Thardus' weak points due to Phazon radation given off by it; but by using her Thermal Visor she is able to target them and attack until she may target them with her Combat Visor. Once Samus destroys enough of its body, Thardus will no longer be able to hold itself together and collapse. Samus is able to collect the Spider Ball upgrade immediately afterward.

Project Titan

The Space Pirates were exposing inanimate objects to Phazon radiation in an attempt to bring them to life. One of the Pirates' successes was with Thardus. As they continued to tame it, they considered putting it on patrol in the Phazon Mines but due to violent behavior that resulted in massive casualties, Project Titan was suspended indefinitely and Thardus placed in the Quarantine Cave.
