The Zero Suit is not an extension of the Chozo battle armor usually worn by Samus. Instead it's what she wears underneath it in most games. The suit was originally featured in Metroid Zero Mission, hence the name Zero Suit. The suit soon made a second appearance, this time in 3D, in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, released later the same year. The Zero Suit has been featured in every Metroid game since Zero Mission. Zero Mission marks the only Metroid game released so for where the player gets to control Samus in her Zero Suit, although the suit is also available in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Prior to 2004 Samus had always been pictured in a bikini or in underwear when not wearing one of her Power Suits or in the event of the suit exploding.
