The X are the species of parasitic organisms fought by Samus in the Biologic Space Labs (B.S.L.) in Metroid Fusion. They invade a host body and absorb the DNA, then multiply and kill the host. The only natural enemy of the X is the Metroid.

The X, native of planet SR-388, were hunted to near-extinction by the Metroids, which were created for the purpose of eliminating the X. With the extermination of the Metroids on SR388 by Samus in Metroid II: Return of Samus, the X began to thrive again.
