The Dark Beam is a Luminoth-designed beam weapon featured in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

Properties
The Dark Beam is a weapon created by the Luminoth which mimics the dark energy of Dark Aether.
The Dark Beam fires a blast of dark energy that can encase its targets in dark matter, in a function similar to that of the Ice Beam. Normal blasts from the Dark Beam take numerous hits to encase its target, whereas the charged Dark Beam, known as the Entangler, can instantly encase a target. The Entangler also spreads to any nearby enemies, either damaging or freezing them. Samus can shatter most encased enemies with Missiles.

Samus can use the Dark Beam to open Portals to Dark Aether. Shields with a light polarity can be overloaded by the Dark Beam. It can temporarily disable Light Crystals. Lift Crystals can also be manipulated through use of the Dark Beam.
Description
The Dark Beam was originally created as a means to combat the Ing, under the theory that the energy of the Dark Beam would overload Dark creatures, destroying them. However, after testing, it was discovered that the Dark Beam was quite useless, as it only caused minor damage. Leading the Luminoth to create the Light Beam and Annihilator Beam.

The Dark Beam was originally created after the Luminoth discovered the Ing's attacks as dark energy. They attempted to overload the Ing with dark energy, but found that the Dark Beam was less than effective. The Light Beam was developed soon afterward. While it does a small amount of damage against Ing and Darklings, the Dark Beam does a high amount of damage to light creatures.
The Dark Beam fires strange energy similar to the native energy of Dark Aether. A globular mass of dark energy is fired, which clings to objects and targets, then dissipates after a short time. Normal shots resemble swirling flattened disks of this dark energy, trailed by a dark streak and globular emanations.

Despite the lack of effectiveness against the Ing, the Dark Beam was still used by the Luminoth in their war. The Ing came into possession of the Dark Beam after they defeated the Luminoth champion A-Kul. The Space Pirates eventually found the Dark Beam and took it to their base in Agon Wastes. After Samus defeats Dark Samus for the first time, she recovers the Dark Beam from a nearby room. The Space Pirates apparently were using the Dark Beam to open up a rift portal to Dark Aether so they could obtain Phazon.
The Dark Beam can cancel the effects of Light Beacons and Light Crystals, this effect is only temporary and can be reversed by using the Light Beam. The Dark Beam can also open Dark Portals and can be used to open purple/black doors.

Darkburst
The Dark Beam has limited ammunition, destroying targets and containers with the Light Beam will give ammunition for the Dark Beam, and vice versa.
Darkburst
The Darkburst is the Charge Combo to the Dark Beam. It fires a slow moving blast that explodes when it impacts something, generating a void that pulls slower enemies into another dimension in the process.

Samus's Notes
"When out of Dark Ammo, you can charge the Dark Beam to fire a normal shot. Fire the Dark Beam to deactivate Crystals. Dark Beam blasts have limited effect on Ing and dark creatures. It takes several hits with the Dark Beam to hinder enemies and enshroud them with dark matter. Charge the Dark Beam to fire an Entangler blast. Enemies stuck by this blast will be enveloped in shadow tendrils for a few moments, unable to move or fire. The Entangler costs 5 Dark Ammo to fire."<ref name=Notes>{{cite|When out of Dark Ammo, you can charge the Dark Beam to fire a normal shot. Fire the Dark Beam to deactivate Crystals.
