The twelve Chozo Totems in the Artifact Temple on Tallon IV are part of a Cipher meant to halt the spread of Phazon on the planet. When used in conjunction with the Chozo Artifacts, the Totems open the way to the center of the Impact Crater.[1]
The Totems are activated once Samus retrieves the Artifact of Truth. Each Totem can then be scanned for clues, written in Chozo runes,[2] regarding the location of the other eleven Artifacts.[1] Once an Artifact is acquired, power is restored to the corresponding Totem.[3]
When Samus returns to the Temple with all twelve Artifacts, Meta Ridley attacks and destroys the Totems, making travel to the Impact Crater impossible. After Meta Ridley's defeat, however, a number of Chozo Ghosts appear and open the path to the Crater in her behalf.
