== Template change project ==
== MediaWiki update 1.23.0 ==

A while ago we started the task of phasing out the [[Template:Artwork|artwork]], [[Template:Logbook image|logbook image]], [[Template:Screenshot|screenshot]], and <s>sprite</s> templates in favor of the more universal [[Template:Source|source template]].  While we have made progress, these templates are still on over 1000 pages. If anyone would like to assist me in their removal so we can finally finish this project, it would be greatly appreciated. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 00:19, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
Report any issues below!!

:::With template:Sprite killed in action (yay!!!), I would like to focus our efforts on Template:logbook image now. This one will take a bit more work cause we also need to make sure we're using [[:File:Metroid Prime Scans.png|the wonderful image]] that [[User:Dany36|Dany36]] provided and not ones from Metroid Database. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 04:35, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

== Featured Content ==
== Template cleanup ==

Hey, I thought I'd bump a conversation started [[Talk:Main Page#Featured Content|here]] regarding the front page. Reading the whole conversation would probably be better, but I'll try to summarize the main points. Quoth myself:
I was looking into fixing up the infobox css and noticed there's already a css class setup in [[MediaWiki:Common.css]] for the infobox.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's used very much. I did a search and it seems like there are a lot of different [[:Category:Infobox Templates|infobox templates]]. Should they all look the same (300px width, identical colouring, borders), or do they have deeper complexities than that?  Could we tackle them one by one, activate the common infobox stylings, and then clean it up and refine it till it looks good? Where should we start? -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 05:00, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

:''To summarize the conversation above, the discussion suggests:
:I'm not the master infobox maker here, but as far as I know the only things that change from infobox to infobox are the parameters (game, planet, vulnerabilities, family, voice actor, etc), with the exception of the infoboxes made specifically for each GAME (which have different background images). Other than that I'm pretty sure they all look and function the same way. (A few may also add categories. Not sure.)

:#''Coming up with some sort of rotation schedule for featured content
:So I'm all for creating a more uniform system. Whatever you guys decide is the best way to go about it, I'm willing to be a drone to help implement. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 17:09, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
:#''Finding a way to make "Remember Me?" more sustainable
::I've got a bot that can take care of changes, and most of it should only be in the templates themselves, so that shouldn't be a problem.  Which do you think is a good infobox to start with? Perhaps, something that is used in only a few locations. (I fixed the link above for the infobox category). -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 18:00, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

:''As for the featured content, ideas included:
:::[[Template:Console-infobox]] and [[Template:Company-infobox]] are only used on three articles each. Those would probably work well. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 18:53, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
::::Well, looking through the history, turns out infobox [[Template talk:Planet-infobox|used to be]] the class to use, but then it was replaced by inline css...  Looks like this will be much more complicated than I expected. I've started a [[Template:Company-infobox/WIP|WIP]], we'll see if I can get it looking right. -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 01:15, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

:#''Rotating on a by-visit, weekly, or monthly schedule
==Resizing GIF files==
:#''Creating a [[Template:Tab|tabbed]] template for the main page, giving users the ability to toggle through articles/images
I'm not sure if this is a MediaWiki related issue, but I know something similar has come up in the past: When I tried to resize the gif file in the [[Draygon]] article infobox, the image wouldn't show up in the preview. The |thumb parameter worked, and it displayed fine without any resize parameters at all, but using |150px or the like generated blank images. Any idea what might be causing this? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 18:45, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

:''The only suggestion for expanding the "Remember Me?" section was:
== Ugly Template ==

:#''Allow inclusion of any editor-original topic related to ''Metroid'', turning the current "Remember Me?" articles into a series within the Wiki Exclusive umbrella.''
Can someone tack a whack at fixing the [[Template:Trophy|Trophy Template]]? The "NavHeader" needs to remain [[Template:round|round]] and not be changed to [[Template:roundt|roundt]] because when the "hide" function is toggled it looks ugly otherwise. But when it's set to round it doesn't fit inside the nav borders the same way the other cells do. Check out the [[Template_talk:Trophy|talk page]] for all the gory details. Thanks! {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 21:26, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Eventually I created the two tabbed templates currently on the front page for Featured Articles and Featured Pictures, but I figured those templates would be a temporary measure. That discussion was a while ago and was basically just me and Bop1996 throwing ideas back and forth, so I'd like to get more input since there's been a refreshing surge of activity here recently. Any comments on either topic? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 01:30, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
== Wiki Coverage of Smash Bros. ==

== Featured Article/ Main Page content ==
Ok, here's something that I think needs to come up again. Should we be covering all the Super Smash Bros. games? I don't think it's relevant to have long lists of characters that have nothing to do with the Metroidverse on badly written articles on a Metroid wiki. Check out [[:Category:Super_Smash_Bros.|this category]] for some of the pages in question. I say we kill them all, or merge most of them into brief synopses with links to the wikis that should be covering them (like SmashWiki and MarioWiki, for example). Thoughts? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 03:26, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

I am going to propose that we give admins autonomous ability to promote featured article. There are two few users to vote, and there are only three active admins, I think we can each trust each others' judgement on placing articles in the featured pool and this way it can be updated with more frequency. I really don't see a situation in which one of the admins chooses and article and it turns out to be bad. And in the worst case scenario, we can rescind whatever article was chosen. If a non-admin wants an article featured, I think he or she can simply ask an admin, and in that case the admin can decide whether or not the article is worthy. In most cases I imagine, the admin would probably give a yes vote. At the very least, I propose a two admin yes count, though a one admin decision I think would work fine. Also, we should have a consistent featured pool, somewhere between 3 - 5 articles/pictures. {{:User:Malake256/sig}} 04:20, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
:I think either we just get rid of the game pages completely and stick to [[Metroid in the Super Smash Bros. Series]], or we keep one page for each game (just like the Metroid games) but keep the content to a minimum. I'm not too sure if [[Sticker]] and [[Trophy]] are within scope here though. Also, I think we should make it obvious which links are external links, maybe with icons beside them. -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 22:32, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

:I think I like the idea of having two votes from admins, otherwise there really wouldn't be a point to nominating things, and I've always thought giving people the ability to vote on nominations was a good community builder. I think an alternate to this would be to create a ''time restriction'' on how long an article can be up for nomination. If it has significant support by the time the time limit is up, it can be featured even if it doesn't have five votes.
::The icon idea is good, as for the Smash Bros. content, maybe get rid of Sticker and Trophy. If there is something specific that has trophies or stickers, we should mention them on its article. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 05:49, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

:As for the consistency of the featured pool: do you mean a consistent pool of things to be nominated, or a consistent pool of things featured on the front page at one time? I'm not sure I like the idea of limiting how many things we keep featured on the front page. I assumed that once we grew to that point, where there was more articles or pictures than could be reasonably stored on a tabbed template, that we'd move to a different sort of rotation. Just because we have ''more'' featured articles or pictures doesn't lower the quality of the articles/pictures that were initially featured, and we should still draw attention to them. (Disqualifying featured content because it no longer meets our standards for what's considered good enough to be featured is another matter.) {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 04:36, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
:::Let's do what the Zelda Wiki (my home wiki :P) did. They made pages for each game, the series itself, glitches, hacks, items, and characters, but tended to talk mostly about its relationship with Zelda. But, they kept everything short and simple, and reminded the reader that the Smash Wiki had more in-depth articles. Does that sound good? — [[User:Phaazonian|Phaazonian]] ([[User talk:Phaazonian|Talk]]) 16:55, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

::Two admin votes sounds good to me, though I wouldn't mind the occasional user opinion or two if they are available (just to say what they like or don't like about it, I'd appreciate their insight). A time restriction can definitely be made for the duration of nominations, perhaps a month? I don't mind a slow growth for the articles and images considered "Featured", just as long as it is a growth, we definitely need to have extra scrutiny on their quality to make sure they are the best we've made. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 05:08, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
::::I'm all for killing the Sticker and Trophy pages and merging that content into the [[Metroid in the Super Smash Bros. Series]] article. Honestly, '''I feel like this Wiki is struggling as it is just to get the Metroid series covered and the Smash articles are a waste of resources and time'''. We have a whole SmashWiki dedicated to it, as well as the powerhouses like Mario Wiki which are covering it too (though I don't really know why. It isn't exactly a Mario game, is it? By the same logic, why would a Metroid Wiki have a page with a list of Smash characters?).

:::I think three months would be a good amount of time, since people kind of flow in and out around here. Give them a chance to voice their opinions. <s>Also, I think the same rule should apply for opposition votes: Two or three opposition votes by admins (or even non-admins) should disqualify a nomination.</s> (That's already in the rules. :P)
::::The general consensus seems to be that we merge everything. If there aren't any objections, I'm thinking a good way to do this, rather than make separate articles for each game and the series, is to merge ALL of that content into just one article. [[Super Smash Bros. (game)]], [[Super Smash Bros. Melee]], and [[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]], as well as [[Super Smash Bros. (series)]], [[Sticker]], and [[Trophy]] could all redirect to [[Metroid in the Super Smash Bros. Series]], where we'd have a nice synopsis of everything, and then just stick to Metroid. Cuz let's get real, if anyone is coming to Metroid Wiki it all it isn't to read about Smash Bros. Any comments? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 01:46, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

:::Also... any comments on the section above concerning featured rotation options and ways to make the "Remember Me?" section of the page more sustainable? Bop1996 and I had a long conversation about it a while ago on the [[Talk:Main Page#Featured Content|Main Page]] talk page... {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 02:59, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
So I completely revamped the [[Metroid in the Super Smash Bros. Series]] page and merged all the information onto it from the other pages. If everyone likes the look of it and there are no objections, I'll redirect all the other pages to that one (Or delete them, if they're irrelevant), probably on Friday. I realize that the page is pretty huge; I personally don't have a problem with it the way it is right now, but if anyone doesn't like the size we could divvy it up into ''Metroid in (game)'' rather than ''Metroid in (series)''. But like I said, that might not be necessary. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 22:34, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

::::I think it's a little difficult to sustain when people, as you said, flow in and out. It is fun to write, but after the first couple it felt forced rather than fun. If we came up with a specific schedule on releases, I might be more inclined to write. Otherwise I think it'd be best to drop it and/or replace it with something else on the main page. We could go for a more simple design on the main page, maybe a lot smaller or something. {{:User:Malake256/sig}} 21:49, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
:I looks quite nice, it may be better to split it into multiple articles in my opinion. The new Smash Bros. content will add a lot to the page. The only other thing I think it needs is some better interwiki links. I'll have some time to take care of it this weekend, probably will make templates for all NIWA wikis. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 04:14, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
::Do you think it'd be possible to add a link to the StrategyWiki guide on each of the game pages as well? -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 14:22, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

:::::Editorials like this aren't easy to sustain, while I think they are cool, I wouldn't mind discontinuing them indefinitely. A slight redesign of the main page would be interesting Malake, there are a few old things on the community bar that need to be removed that we discontinued a while ago. <s>And on the topic of the featured pictures... can we also change it so we don't have to give a critical analysis of a picture? I can't think of what to say sometimes...<s>{{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 00:42, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
:::Good point! I'll add those. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 19:49, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

As far as the Remember Me section, I wasn't thinking of having you continue to write those. I think it's a little impossible to write in such a narrow topic indefinitely, and on one's own. It was more like... why not make it a place where users could submit creative articles, (For example, I'd be interested in writing something on the Theoretical Physics of Interdimensional Travel, as seen in MP2), and we could feature interesting, fan-made articles on ''Metroid'' related topics? On Zelda Wiki these are called "Wikiexclusive" articles. They are a lot of fun to write and to read. Then all of the currently existing articles in the section could be part of a Wiki Exclusive "series" (written by Malake, and called "remember me"), but the following Wiki Exclusives could be written on a variety of topics by various people. That's just one option, though, to keep that section alive. (It'd be renamed, probably, of course). If we were to redesign though, I guess we could just abandon that project.
== Wave of account creations ==

I'm not sure what you mean about the critical analysis of a picture...? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 02:02, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
I checked the IP of several of the new users at random and there is no match between any of them. It's pretty reasonable to say that these are spam creations, would there by a way to make it tougher for these to get through? {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 04:02, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
:Asirra (the cat captcha) was shut down earlier this month, so I switched to a very basic captcha temporarily.  I'm going to activate a newer captcha soon, so it should stop them. -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 16:14, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

:I apologize there, a bit of confusion on my part lol. I don't know why but I thought that I had to give much more detailed opinion as to why it should be featured. As for the editorials, I'll go along with whatever we agree upon. I have no strong opinions either way. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 00:07, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
== Interwiki links ==

:: I like the idea of having a general creative outlet rather than having the section be specifically about old and obscure metroid things. Though I think there is plenty of relevant material for that in Metroid, giving a section where users or even just readers can submit anything would be cool. Like maybe even an entire chapter of fanfic can be used to cross promote. And we can always keep remember me? As a 'type' of submission. It would be fun to write about the physics that would be involved in some of these things :D Names? Metroid related? Or something like ZW's exclusive? {{:User:Malake256/sig}} 08:11, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
I mentioned making these a while ago for articles that should be linked to other wikis like the Smash Bros. articles. I'm thinking we use their icon next to the link, for example [[File:BPIcon.png]][[bulbapedia:Greninja|Greninja]]. Opinions? {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 02:45, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

:::You can check out ZW's page on [[zeldawiki:Help:WikiExclusives|Wikiexclusives]] for more info on what they do there, we may be able to use a few of those guidelines for our own version (One of the most creative articles I saw was "The Science of Cryobiology in Zoras," cuz, you know, they get frozen a lot. :D). I definitely think these kinds of articles should be subject to '''admin review''' before being published. And I think we should still encourage references (where applicable). Any ideas for a name? Metroid-related ideas off the top of my head are... ''Mission Logs'', ''Metroid Wiki Data'' (or just ''Wiki Data/Logs/Lore''), or maybe ''Wiki Artifacts''. I admit they're a bit cheesy and I'm totally open to different ideas if none of those are appealing. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 16:25, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
:I like it! It'd be nice to tell at a glance, without hovering, where the link goes. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 16:08, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

::::I think we can lay down some of ZW's rules for a base. I'm liking this idea {{:User:Malake256/sig}} 22:52, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
::Sorry for taking so long on this. I have two thoughts on how we can implement it:

:::::I made a rudimentary Help Page in my [[User:Embyr_75/Sandbox#Help:Metroid Wiki Exclusives (Title Pending)|Sandbox]]. Any comments or changes? Also, any thoughts on a name? I'm thinking something logbook-y sounding. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 00:28, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
::<nowiki>{{bulbapedia|Greninja}}</nowiki> or <nowiki>{{interwiki|bulbapedia|Greninja}}</nowiki>

::::::I propose calling it... The Daily Beetal! (horrible title, please don't choose that...) Do you have any specific titles you want to propose? And I think it looks nice so far, a change I would suggest is maybe having a staff vote on it instead of just one staff member. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 00:37, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
::Both could give the same image+link, but one more complex template vs 22+. Opinions? {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 18:46, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

:::::::Yeah, sorry, I didn't make myself clear. As on ZW, I intended all the admins to weigh in (but for the writer to send it to just one of us. Simpler for them). I'll rewrite that section in my sandbox to make it more clear. As for names, I posted a couple above (Logbook-related names, like ''Metroid Wiki Data/Logs/Lore/Testaments/Research Data'' or just ''Wiki Data/Logs/etc''), but I'd like to hear some other suggestions if you guys have any... {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 01:28, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
:::I think either way is fine, but probably making one template would be better if we ever wanted to change anything about it. So my vote is for making <nowiki>{{interwiki}}</nowiki>, but I'm fine with either. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 18:59, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
== New Templates ==

Prod has made some new templates that will serve as replacements for old templates or ease the coding in others.
== Front Page Cleanup ==
*{{t|Game-color}} will replace most [[:Category:Color Templates|color templates]]
*{{t|Game-link}} will replace [[:Category:Game Link Templates|colored game link templates]]
*{{t|Game-key}} is to be used in other templates to simplify the game linking

I'm still trying to figure out their usage so that'll be coming soon. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 04:28, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
So there's a couple things I've been thinking about:

:And just an FYI, I will preserve a listing of all the colors on something like [[Help:Color_codes|this]], probably on the game-color template page itself. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 04:36, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
* '''Rotating the Featured Articles and Images.''' Voting has been stagnant and the look of the front page hasn't changed for some time as a result. I thinking rotating our handful of features each visit will keep it looking fresher than the tabbed templates we have now.

== Life form category refinements  ==
* '''Skype Chat and Skype Archives.''' Also stagnant. I say if we aren't using it, we should throw it out and replace it with something better.

So Malake and I been working on further refining our category system and we have two proposals to make. The first is removing the wildlife categories, replacing them with the already existing life form categories. The reasoning behind this is to simplify that system a bit and certain things like transplanted species or Pirates don't really work in those categories.
* '''Remember Me?''' Nothing actually seems to link to these pages anymore. We could just leave them for a while, but at the moment they're not doing anything.

The second is a reworking of the categories themselves. We've been working on some revamps [[User:Metroidking/Sandbox/Categories|here]]. More information is on that page, but the most recent revision is much more organized in my opinion.
* '''Wiki Lore:''' This is an idea we tossed around. They'd be editorial articles that we'd write ourselves and/or invite contributors to write. I'm thinking we could release them on a monthly basis. It would give us some exclusive content. I already have several in the works -- if we're going to launch this I think it would be good to have a bumper crop of articles so we don't fall behind in publishing them. It would replace the ''Editor Station'' space.

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated :). {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 20:27, 28 July 2013 (UTC)
Thoughts? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 16:16, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

:I really like revision 2. I think it's simple and elegant. But we need to rename the "sentient/non-sentient" categories; sentience is basically having consciousness, so being unintelligent doesn't mean you're non-sentient. :P Also, sorry about being inactive all weekend, I was outta town. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 00:50, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
: Main page definitely could use some touch ups.
*Featured content: Randomizing to avoid stagnation sounds good to me.

::Prod ran a text replace with pages linking to the Wildlife categories, they now link to Life Form equivalents. The new framework for the categories will need to be set up and the old categories deleted. Concerning the sentient/non-sentient, that point was brought up by Template-Man as well and I'm fine with changing it. Intelligent species works for one, anyone got a good name for the second one? {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 06:03, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
*Skype: we could remove the archives. The public chat is a mixed bag, not much wiki chat goes on in there, but there's still Metroid related discussions going on. If you do have an idea for something better I'd still be interested in hearing it, particularly for staff communication.

:::Before we work on creations of the categories, I just want to make sure we're clear on how the setup will be. An example category chain for say Magmoors would be Magmoor Caverns Life Forms ->Tallon IV Life Forms (hub category for all plants, animals, fungi, and other stuff on Tallon IV) ->Life Forms. Any Problems with this? {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 17:34, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
*Remember Me:It's already removed from the main page, but I think we should still have them archived.

::::No objections. As for the "Intelligent" species issue, that's tough. I can't really find a single word (except, perhaps, [[wikipedia:Sapience|Sapience]], which is rather obscure) that we could use to apply to both sets of species. I suggest we focus on the organizational aspect, i.e., their ability to build civilizations, to distinguish them from animals (even ones who may congregate with pack or swarm mentalities). But it's definitely tough. The first word that comes to mind is "Civilized" versus "Uncivilized," but I don't think I really like it. I'll do more research and see if I can come up with anything else. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 17:56, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
*Wiki Lore:I think it'd be a cool new addition. Would you be able to share the topics of what you're working on now? {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 05:12, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

:::::I don't think "Civilized" would work for our intentions, the Space Pirates don't fit really fit under that. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 01:34, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
::Ok, great. I'll look into randomizing the rotation, unless you beat me to it. As for staff communication, I'm leaning towards a forum; it's easier to document and check regularly, imo. What do you think? Any ideas for where we could do that? Maybe NIWA...

Yeah, that's why I didn't like it. That word has too many alternate meanings besides the intended one, which is, more directly, a "Civilization." After scouring Wikipedia, I'd have to say that "Sapient" is definitely the best word I've found. Here's a brief blurb from Wikipedia: ''"In fantasy fiction and science fiction, sapience describes an essential human property that bestows "personhood" onto a non-human. It indicates that a computer, alien, mythical creature or other object will be treated as a completely human character, with similar rights, capabilities and desires as any human character."'' :OK, one more comment on this. If "Sapient" or "Intelligent Species" doesn't work for everyone, I'd like to direct your attention to the [[Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Bonus Disc Logbook]]. It's set up a little differently from the regular logbook. The [[Ing]] and [[Space Pirate]]s are filed away under "Sentient" whereas the other creatures are not. Even though this doesn't reflect the full scope of the word as some use it, apparently, in the ''Metroid'' universe, "Sentient" is limited to intelligent, self-aware, organized species. Some Sci-Fi series will use the word this way, like ''Star Trek'', so I guess this isn't surprising. So I'd actually support any of those three suggestions, in light of this: ''Sapient'', ''Intelligent Species'', or ''Sentient''. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 00:56, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
== Simplifying the Sidebar + Projects/Maintenance ==

::Sapient works for me. Probably the best fitting of the names. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 18:36, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
I noticed while on Inkipedia that they've got a couple things going for them as far as community navigation that I think would be great to implement here:

*Simplified sidebar. Ours is cluttered and unhelpful. Specifically, I'm thinking we can drop the "Featured Articles" and "Featured Pictures," which are pretty much dead features on this site right now anyway, and also drop the "Random Page" and "Random Picture" links, and maybe even the "Wanted Pages." I think it would make the sidebar a lot more sleek.

== Room articles ==
*[[inkipedia:Inkipedia:Projects|Projects]] and [[inkipedia:Inkipedia:Maintenance|Maintenance]] pages, which are great. I'd love to have those (and put them on the sidebar), especially for documenting particular on-going issues in more detail (like some of our Metroid Prime room articles, which exist but don't have the proper layout, enough sources, or images).

Hey guys, I haven't done much here lately since I've been doing plenty of work at Nookipedia (where I'm an admin), and I still have plenty of unfinished work here. I was wondering if any of you guys could help me out with the room articles. To make things easier, I have a preferred order of the room articles under "Current projects" on my [[User:Wookiee123#Current projects|user page]]. I would greatly appreciate any help with these projects while I'm at Nookipedia, and I may return to add more content to these articles as well. --{{:User:Wookiee123/sig}} 01:15, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
Thoughts? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 23:33, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
:*I personally like the Random Page feature. I'd suggest getting rid of About Us (linked at the bottom of the page), Featured Articles/Pictures (listed on the front page), Wanted Pages (not likely to be used frequently), Random Picture (generally comes along with page), and ''maybe'' sandbox. I'd also suggest merging the Community and Wiki Editing sections, since there may not be enough links in each section to warrant a separation.
:*Maintenance is nice to centralize some commonly used pages and [[StrategyWiki:StrategyWiki:Cleanup project/Long term tasks|StrategyWiki]] also has something similar. Projects are also good for organization, but they're very hard to keep going without a few people already active in it.

::All sounds good to me. I agree that projects will be hard to keep going, but since I'm basically the only active editor (and not even that active, now that Splatoon has taken over my life), I'm not going to worry too much about how much support these pages garner right now; I'm thinking more long term (aka wishful thinking). If you're all for these changes, I'll let you go ahead and implement them however you think looks good (feel free to put red links on the sidebar if you don't feel like creating them now and I'll throw something together). {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 02:39, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

Hey, I know this may be totally out of the question, but I was wondering if a merger could be reached between Metroid Wiki and Wikitroid. I've read our article about [[Wikitroid]] in the past, so I know about the whole incident with the rivalries that were later solved. Even though this sounds totally far-fetched, I wanted to know if we could retry a merger. In order to get the maximum amount of content on this wiki, we would need over 1,800 more articles.
== Random function ==

When it comes to wiki layout, this wiki takes the cake, but for content, Wikitroid has most of it. Sorry if this is out of the blue, but it's just a request to see if we can both reach a merger to potentially combine our superior interface and all their content. --{{:User:Wookiee123/sig}} 08:21, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
I noticed the <nowiki><random></nowiki> functions aren't working anymore (ex: [[Samus Aran]]). Not sure what caused it or how to fix it. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 05:26, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
:I got rid of the RandomText extension and replaced it with the RandomSelection extention since the other wikis use this and the syntax is cleaner.  I've fixed the syntax on that page so it looks like it's working properly again. -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 06:42, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

:Isn't part of the fun of wiki editing having to start from scratch and watching your work pile up? ;) As far as merging, I can't speak for Wikitroid of course, but as you know, the whole point of NIWA is to avoid Wiki Farms (such as Wikia) and use independent hosts, so moving to Wikia would not be an option if we wanted to stick with NIWA.
== New Help Guide Nav ==

:If Wikitroid users want to move here, I suppose we could open a dialogue, but there's a lot more involved than just merging content. It's merging users, merging policies, merging communities... it's a bit complicated. I wouldn't say I'm against such a thing, but it would definitely take a lot of work and I'm not sure everyone would be happy with such an arrangement. I know our content is small now, but it's growing, and if we could get a steady userbase it could really improve things, so I'm not discouraged by our current article count. And personally I like a little friendly competition!! ;) {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 16:44, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
I've been rewriting and trimming the help pages as well as [[User:Embyr_75/Sandbox#New_Help_Guide_Nav|working on a new nav]]. I'd like to merge our four (why do we need four separate pages!?!?!) policy pages, and eliminate unhelpful pages completely, namely the '''web-safe colors''', [[Help:Featured Content Nomination]] (which I'm currently treating as dead and also scheming to remove from the front page), Help:User Accounts, [[Help:User Rights]], and Help:Protected Pages. I'm also thinking that Help:Custom Signatures can be merged into [[Help:Advanced Functions]].

::Like Embyr said, it's a lot of work. My biggest problem wouldn't be that part, it'd be some of their users. The community there is downright hostile at times. Then there's the problem with the Wikia overlords, the articles could be brought over but the overlords would force all content to remain, still leaving two major wikis. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 22:51, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
Any thoughts on this overhaul and on the [[User:Embyr_75/Sandbox#New_Help_Guide_Nav|beta new help guide nav]]? If we like the simple, image-oriented motif, I was thinking we could remove the featured image/article from the front page and create a similar, community-oriented nav for the front page (which could potentially go on the [[Metroid Wiki:Discussion Center|Discussion Center]], [[Metroid Wiki:Projects|Projects]], [[Metroid Wiki:Maintenance|Maintenance]], and other relevant pages too). The front page a little messy and disorganized at the moment. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 05:22, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

:::All of this is true. If we can at least borrow their content rather than the whole community, then everything would be fine. This is what happened when the Wikia wiki Animal Crossing City merged into Nookipedia. Some users moved, and all content was merged into Nookipedia even though the original wiki still exists. If possible, that's all that can be done. {{:User:Wookiee123/sig}} 15:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
:UPDATE: I also started constructing a nav for the community pages/front page. I couldn't decide between three headers and now I'm thinking we could just rotate them, and implement the same rotation for the Help Guide nav. Input please! Cuz if I don't get input I'm just gonna go crazy and start changing things!! ^_^ {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 17:04, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

::::Borrowing content would be big no no. And like I thought, their community didn't want to go for it anyway. In any case I'd rather work on the content ourselves, even if it takes years it'll be more satisfying. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 18:36, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
::For elimination of unhelpful pages, I think those listed can be removed. Merging custom signatures into advances functions sounds fine to me. As for the changes to the front page, I'd like to check it on a higher res computer before giving any major feedback but I do think it looks great so far. {{:User:Metroidking/sig}} 03:07, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

== Strange Spacing/Upload Issues ==
:::Roger that! Thanks for the feedback. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 03:36, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

I recently noticed spacing issues that I don't believe we had before popping up all over the site. For example, in [[Template:Creature-infobox|this Template]], (see [[Seedburster|an example here]]), all the options take up three lines of space instead of just one, making the infobox needlessly tall. Anyone else seeing this? Know what the problem is? Even on the Recent Changes, the round box with the ''useful links'' in it got taller (extra space on top and bottom). It's not just me, is it? Seems like some kind of site-wide issue rather than limited to particular templates.
== Manual template ==

Also, when I upload new versions of files, it takes days for the transparent versions to show up, even when I purge my cache/delete all my browsing history. Did we do a server-side update or something I'm not aware of that's making everything wacky? Or has my computer completely lost its mind? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 17:03, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

:So I discovered the problem in the [[Template:Creature-infobox|Creature infobox template]]; for some reason the line break between <nowiki>{{!}}</nowiki> and the following line created that weird extra space. In Japan, the enemy [[Geemer]] is called ジーマ (Jiima) and [[Zoomer]] is likely a mistranslation, because save for Zero Mission the rest of the main series calls them Geemers in English (also ヅ (dzu) and ジ (ji) look alike.) But in the Prime series, both Zoomers and Geemers are there, and in the Japanese version they are called ギーマー (Giimaa). Should all Zoomer data besides Prime's also be with Geemer, since they are technically the same creature? [[User:Zharkaer|Zharkaer]] ([[User talk:Zharkaer|talk]]) 08:53, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

The problem with all 6 of these articles is that they are stubs and extremely similar, so combining them into 1 article removes 6 stubs and simply looks cleaner.

Well I'm not sure about the recent changes (probably a CSS related thing), but I talked to Prod and he said that the image delay caused by the content delivery network. == Should email address be required for new accounts? ==

:::The more I look around, the more I'm thinking reverting might be a good idea. It's messing up a lot of templates, creating tons of unnecessary empty space, and things like the way words appear in the galleries. Any thoughts? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 20:47, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
On this wiki, a login is required to edit pages, analogous to requiring a login to post on a forum. But while nearly all forums also require an email address to be specified, this wiki doesn't require that, even for new accounts. So how about making email confirmation a requirement for all new accounts. The requirement should not affect existing users who have not (yet) specified a valid email address.
::::My personal view is that the paragraphs look much nicer with the added space. [[Space Pirate]] has a lot of paragraphs, and without the added spacing the text looks a bit squished. You can see the difference by copying my [[User:Prod/quantumleap.css|custom css page]]. -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 04:08, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

:::::I guess I see what you're saying, but I've always dealt with "squishy" pages by adding more images and "dressing up" the page more to compensate. I think it would be easier, on a day-to-day editing basis, to just dress up pages that get to that point (and if it's looking that way, it's probably an indication that the page is looking drab anyway), rather than create aesthetic problems on templates. To me, this spacing feels normal. But hey, I can always just use the custom css to see it the way I want if no one else agrees. :) {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 17:12, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

::::Sure thing! ''This image'' is a comparison between how the Species infobox looks when I'm logged in with my custom css working (top), and when I'm logged out and viewing as a guest user (bottom). Notice the needless extra space around the Game parameters. It doesn't seem like a big issue, but when all the parameters start doing that, you get a very long infobox. I'm using Chrome, if that makes a difference. I haven't looked with other browsers. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 04:34, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
we are seriously lacking any stuff on it
:::::So the cause of this is that when parameters are sent to the templates, the leading whitespace is trimmed.  And without a * starting on a new line, it's just treated as a *, not a bullet.  We may want to create a generic infobox css class that is implemented skin-wide.  That way we can override the larger spacing around paragraphs. ::::::While I think the premise of these additional spaces has merit, the spaces are just too darn big. Especially in very short or small articles, all that space draws the attention of the eye. The extra space is less awkward in very large articles, but let's face it, the vast, vast majority of our articles are not big. The more I look into this issue, the more strongly I feel that the articles look better without this extra spacing. If it absolutely must stay, then I think we should at least decrease the space to somewhere closer to what it was. == Sidebar ==
Hello, I wanted to ask a question in regards to some of the pages for Dread, Samus Returns, and Prime Remastered. I have noticed a number of these pages are incomplete and wanted to ask if I could help at all for any of these pages. I have capture card capabilities and would be able to at least get pictures and footage for Prime Remastered and Dread, though I don't want to just go ahead and add anything without permission. I know given the current state of this wiki not much has happened and have read the Copy Right page, though I just wanted to get clarification on if adding my own footage and captures are ok to better help these games pages get updated.

The bullets in the sidebar still appear as white dots (instead of like [[:file:Bullet.png|this]]). It's been bugging me forever, but I never brought it up lol. Also, Metroid Headquarters is now Metroid HQ, so we should probably update that was well. Have no idea how to edit the sidebar, though. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 01:01, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

:Those pages could really use some help. Your changes have been good so far, so please continue.

::AH. That... makes sense. ;) Thanks! As for the bullets: Oh well! Then, for now, they shall remain white dots. {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 04:15, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

== May Need to Update or Remove some Affiliate Links ==

I've updated the site to [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.21 Mediawiki 1.21.2], the latest stable release.  I think the only notable feature is that clicking the patrol link uses ajax, instead of reloading the whole page. I haven't tested it, so it may not work in this skin.  This version also changed some of the heading levels for the static menus on the site, so until the cache clears, it will look a bit odd. If you guys see any further issues, please let me know. -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 23:08, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
Hello. I have noticed that Metroid HQ and Metroid Database link to either error pages or an unrelated game ad. I think these links either need to be updated or removed. Metroid HQ has seemingly not posted anything on any social media since 2021, but this is only from a basic Google search, and I think Database has just changed their url. [[User:SuperaJokera|SuperaJokera]] ([[User talk:SuperaJokera|talk]]) 18:12, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

:Hi! I've noticed a couple things already. The header sizes, as you mentioned, on the sidebar are awful. Also, a couple new headers that I don't believe are sitting where they're supposed to be sitting. I've highlighted them in ''this image''. I think they're supposed to be on the same line as the buttons, rather than hovering above and causing a line break.
:I have since looked in Metroid Database, and they have seemingly removed this Wiki from their list of affiliates. [[User:SuperaJokera|SuperaJokera]] ([[User talk:SuperaJokera|talk]]) 18:18, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

::The issues in the screenshot were due to the cache again.  They should have cleared up by now, you may need to purge your cache.  MultipleUpload has not been maintained for a while, and it was really annoying having to manually figure out how to fix it every time.  Instead, we now have [[Special:UploadWizard]].  It's a bit flaky to load the first time, I usually have to refresh the page.  Beyond that, let me know how it works for you. -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 05:15, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Found another one, but I'm not sure if it's related to the update or not. [[:File:Samus-vs-quadraxis.jpg|This image]] no longer generates a thumbnail (didn't used to have that problem) and as a result it doesn't show up on the front page in its Featured Picture rotation either. It looks pretty ugly. Anyone know why this would suddenly happen? Also, the headers in the sidebar are overlapping the purple strip on the left ever so slightly. Any way to bump them? {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 17:43, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

:::Hooray!!! =D Thanks!! {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 20:07, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Found moar possibly related issues. Clicking "Full Resolution" on an image file won't show the full resolution; in fact, the image it generates is usually smaller than the preview (in large screenshots, anyway, such as [[:file:Caretaker Class Drone mp2 Screenshot 01.png|this one]]). Also, animated sprites no longer show in the Gallery. They never worked in Galleries anyway, but the first frame would at least show. Now it's empty (See the [[Screw Attack]] page for an example). {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 23:52, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
:The first image appears the same for me.  The "Full Resolution" is the same size as the image displayed for me.  Perhaps it's a browser issue? As for the second, it looks like it's an issue with thumbnailing again, I may need to increase the memory allocated even more. -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 03:11, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

::Hmm, that's odd. I can't rule out that it's a browser issue (I honestly don't know enough about my browser to know what could cause that), but I'm using the latest version of Chrome and I didn't have a problem with it before the update. I checked the file using IE and noticed that the images were much closer in size than when I was using Chrome but the full resolution still didn't seem much bigger, perhaps even a little smaller. If we're certain it's just my computer doing that, it's fine, I just want to be sure it isn't effecting everyone. :P {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 03:47, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
:::I just tried from chrome on my pc (which has 1920x1080 resolution) and the image is slightly bigger.  The easiest way I found to compare was by right clicking the image and saying "Open image in new tab".  That way you can have the original and thumbnailed picture in tabs to compare.  In the end, all that matters is that the original is accessible.  When you click the link to the full size version, the address should be http://cdn.wikimg.net/metroidwiki/images/6/6d/Caretaker_Class_Drone_mp2_Screenshot_01.png.
:::As for the thumbnailing issue, I'm a bit confused about why that isn't working.  I tried it on the beta site, and after increasing the memory size, it worked.  But I set the memory limit to max on here and it still wouldn't generate. Are there a lot of animated gifs on the site, or is this a rare issue? -- [[User:Prod|Prod]] ([[User talk:Prod|talk]]) 18:16, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

::::Ok, forget the high resolution problem. Yes, it was a problem on my end. And it was so obvious I'm ashamed to tell you what it was. I refuse to divulge!!! XD

::::But about the thumbnails, there are a few animated gifs around, but not a ton. However, I did notice that [[:file:Sporespawn.gif|this gif]], [[:File:Draygon.gif|this gif]], and [[:File:Ridley zm Sprite.gif|this gif]] aren't loading in galleries or navigation templates, even though they aren't animated. Other animated gifs are working fine. I found these three just browsing [[:Category:Sprites|the Sprites Category]]; there are probably more. I don't get why they aren't loading when others are. It's weird. =\ {{:User:Embyr_75/sig}} 00:43, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
:::::Ok, I've increased the memory limit to what I think should work.  Now gotta wait for the cache for those files to expire, which could take a while. *The "Edit" button for sections is now on the left, just after the header, instead of on the right side of the page (I'm guessing this one is on purpose).
*The Edit Summary box area when editing is gray, and the font on it is also gray, making it really hard to read.

Template cleanup[edit source]

I was looking into fixing up the infobox css and noticed there's already a css class setup in MediaWiki:Common.css for the infobox. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's used very much. I did a search and it seems like there are a lot of different infobox templates. Should they all look the same (300px width, identical colouring, borders), or do they have deeper complexities than that? Could we tackle them one by one, activate the common infobox stylings, and then clean it up and refine it till it looks good? Where should we start? -- Prod (talk) 05:00, 15 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm not the master infobox maker here, but as far as I know the only things that change from infobox to infobox are the parameters (game, planet, vulnerabilities, family, voice actor, etc), with the exception of the infoboxes made specifically for each GAME (which have different background images). Other than that I'm pretty sure they all look and function the same way. (A few may also add categories. Not sure.)
So I'm all for creating a more uniform system. Whatever you guys decide is the best way to go about it, I'm willing to be a drone to help implement. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 17:09, 15 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've got a bot that can take care of changes, and most of it should only be in the templates themselves, so that shouldn't be a problem. Which do you think is a good infobox to start with? Perhaps, something that is used in only a few locations. (I fixed the link above for the infobox category). -- Prod (talk) 18:00, 15 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Template:Console-infobox and Template:Company-infobox are only used on three articles each. Those would probably work well. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 18:53, 16 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, looking through the history, turns out infobox used to be the class to use, but then it was replaced by inline css... Looks like this will be much more complicated than I expected. I've started a WIP, we'll see if I can get it looking right. -- Prod (talk) 01:15, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Resizing GIF files[edit source]

I'm not sure if this is a MediaWiki related issue, but I know something similar has come up in the past: When I tried to resize the gif file in the Draygon article infobox, the image wouldn't show up in the preview. The |thumb parameter worked, and it displayed fine without any resize parameters at all, but using |150px or the like generated blank images. Any idea what might be causing this? Embyr 75  --Talk-- 18:45, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ugly Template[edit source]

Can someone tack a whack at fixing the Trophy Template? The "NavHeader" needs to remain round and not be changed to roundt because when the "hide" function is toggled it looks ugly otherwise. But when it's set to round it doesn't fit inside the nav borders the same way the other cells do. Check out the talk page for all the gory details. Thanks! Embyr 75  --Talk-- 21:26, 25 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wiki Coverage of Smash Bros.[edit source]

Ok, here's something that I think needs to come up again. Should we be covering all the Super Smash Bros. games? I don't think it's relevant to have long lists of characters that have nothing to do with the Metroidverse on badly written articles on a Metroid wiki. Check out this category for some of the pages in question. I say we kill them all, or merge most of them into brief synopses with links to the wikis that should be covering them (like SmashWiki and MarioWiki, for example). Thoughts? Embyr 75  --Talk-- 03:26, 14 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think either we just get rid of the game pages completely and stick to Metroid in the Super Smash Bros. Series, or we keep one page for each game (just like the Metroid games) but keep the content to a minimum. I'm not too sure if Sticker and Trophy are within scope here though. Also, I think we should make it obvious which links are external links, maybe with icons beside them. -- Prod (talk) 22:32, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The icon idea is good, as for the Smash Bros. content, maybe get rid of Sticker and Trophy. If there is something specific that has trophies or stickers, we should mention them on its article. MKMetroid mf Sprite.gif 05:49, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Let's do what the Zelda Wiki (my home wiki :P) did. They made pages for each game, the series itself, glitches, hacks, items, and characters, but tended to talk mostly about its relationship with Zelda. But, they kept everything short and simple, and reminded the reader that the Smash Wiki had more in-depth articles. Does that sound good? — Phaazonian (Talk) 16:55, 29 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm all for killing the Sticker and Trophy pages and merging that content into the Metroid in the Super Smash Bros. Series article. Honestly, I feel like this Wiki is struggling as it is just to get the Metroid series covered and the Smash articles are a waste of resources and time. We have a whole SmashWiki dedicated to it, as well as the powerhouses like Mario Wiki which are covering it too (though I don't really know why. It isn't exactly a Mario game, is it? By the same logic, why would a Metroid Wiki have a page with a list of Smash characters?).
The general consensus seems to be that we merge everything. If there aren't any objections, I'm thinking a good way to do this, rather than make separate articles for each game and the series, is to merge ALL of that content into just one article. Super Smash Bros. (game), Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as well as Super Smash Bros. (series), Sticker, and Trophy could all redirect to Metroid in the Super Smash Bros. Series, where we'd have a nice synopsis of everything, and then just stick to Metroid. Cuz let's get real, if anyone is coming to Metroid Wiki it all it isn't to read about Smash Bros. Any comments? Embyr 75  --Talk-- 01:46, 30 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So I completely revamped the Metroid in the Super Smash Bros. Series page and merged all the information onto it from the other pages. If everyone likes the look of it and there are no objections, I'll redirect all the other pages to that one (Or delete them, if they're irrelevant), probably on Friday. I realize that the page is pretty huge; I personally don't have a problem with it the way it is right now, but if anyone doesn't like the size we could divvy it up into Metroid in (game) rather than Metroid in (series). But like I said, that might not be necessary. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 22:34, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I looks quite nice, it may be better to split it into multiple articles in my opinion. The new Smash Bros. content will add a lot to the page. The only other thing I think it needs is some better interwiki links. I'll have some time to take care of it this weekend, probably will make templates for all NIWA wikis. MKMetroid mf Sprite.gif 04:14, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Do you think it'd be possible to add a link to the StrategyWiki guide on each of the game pages as well? -- Prod (talk) 14:22, 7 October 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Good point! I'll add those. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 19:49, 7 October 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wave of account creations[edit source]

I checked the IP of several of the new users at random and there is no match between any of them. It's pretty reasonable to say that these are spam creations, would there by a way to make it tougher for these to get through? MKMetroid mf Sprite.gif 04:02, 25 October 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Asirra (the cat captcha) was shut down earlier this month, so I switched to a very basic captcha temporarily. I'm going to activate a newer captcha soon, so it should stop them. -- Prod (talk) 16:14, 26 October 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Interwiki links[edit source]

I mentioned making these a while ago for articles that should be linked to other wikis like the Smash Bros. articles. I'm thinking we use their icon next to the link, for example BPIcon.pngGreninja. Opinions? MKMetroid mf Sprite.gif 02:45, 31 December 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I like it! It'd be nice to tell at a glance, without hovering, where the link goes. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 16:08, 31 December 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry for taking so long on this. I have two thoughts on how we can implement it:
{{bulbapedia|Greninja}} or {{interwiki|bulbapedia|Greninja}}
Both could give the same image+link, but one more complex template vs 22+. Opinions? MKMetroid mf Sprite.gif 18:46, 29 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think either way is fine, but probably making one template would be better if we ever wanted to change anything about it. So my vote is for making {{interwiki}}, but I'm fine with either. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 18:59, 29 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Front Page Cleanup[edit source]

So there's a couple things I've been thinking about:

  • Rotating the Featured Articles and Images. Voting has been stagnant and the look of the front page hasn't changed for some time as a result. I thinking rotating our handful of features each visit will keep it looking fresher than the tabbed templates we have now.
  • Skype Chat and Skype Archives. Also stagnant. I say if we aren't using it, we should throw it out and replace it with something better.
  • Remember Me? Nothing actually seems to link to these pages anymore. We could just leave them for a while, but at the moment they're not doing anything.
  • Wiki Lore: This is an idea we tossed around. It would replace the Editor Station space.

Thoughts? Embyr 75  --Talk-- 16:16, 31 December 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Main page definitely could use some touch ups.
  • Featured content: Randomizing to avoid stagnation sounds good to me.
  • Skype: we could remove the archives. The public chat is a mixed bag, not much wiki chat goes on in there, but there's still Metroid related discussions going on. If you do have an idea for something better I'd still be interested in hearing it, particularly for staff communication.
  • Remember Me:It's already removed from the main page, but I think we should still have them archived.
  • Wiki Lore:I think it'd be a cool new addition. Would you be able to share the topics of what you're working on now? MKMetroid mf Sprite.gif 05:12, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, great. I'll look into randomizing the rotation, unless you beat me to it. As for staff communication, I'm leaning towards a forum; it's easier to document and check regularly, imo. What do you think? Any ideas for where we could do that? Maybe NIWA...
Remember Me is basically archived, so I guess we can leave that as is. The three Wiki Lore projects I'm working on are interviews with major figures in the Metroid community; I'll email you my drafts and some other details. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 17:55, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Simplifying the Sidebar + Projects/Maintenance[edit source]

I noticed while on Inkipedia that they've got a couple things going for them as far as community navigation that I think would be great to implement here:

  • Simplified sidebar.
  • Projects and Maintenance pages, which are great. I'd love to have those (and put them on the sidebar), especially for documenting particular on-going issues in more detail (like some of our Metroid Prime room articles, which exist but don't have the proper layout, enough sources, or images).

Thoughts? Embyr 75  --Talk-- 23:33, 20 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I personally like the Random Page feature. I'd suggest getting rid of About Us (linked at the bottom of the page), Featured Articles/Pictures (listed on the front page), Wanted Pages (not likely to be used frequently), Random Picture (generally comes along with page), and maybe sandbox. I'd also suggest merging the Community and Wiki Editing sections, since there may not be enough links in each section to warrant a separation.
  • Maintenance is nice to centralize some commonly used pages and StrategyWiki also has something similar. Projects are also good for organization, but they're very hard to keep going without a few people already active in it.
-- Prod (talk) 01:45, 21 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
All sounds good to me. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 02:39, 21 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've made most of the changes. Once pages are created, we can add them to the sidebar. -- Prod (talk) 04:52, 21 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I created the Metroid Wiki:Maintenance and Metroid Wiki:Projects pages and added them to the sidebar, such as they are. Thoughts? Embyr 75  --Talk-- 18:42, 21 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Random function[edit source]

I noticed the <random> functions aren't working anymore (ex: Samus Aran). Not sure what caused it or how to fix it. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 05:26, 23 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I got rid of the RandomText extension and replaced it with the RandomSelection extention since the other wikis use this and the syntax is cleaner. I've fixed the syntax on that page so it looks like it's working properly again. -- Prod (talk) 06:42, 23 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New Help Guide Nav[edit source]

I've been rewriting and trimming the help pages as well as working on a new nav. I'd like to merge our four (why do we need four separate pages!?!?!) policy pages, and eliminate unhelpful pages completely, namely the web-safe colors, Help:Featured Content Nomination (which I'm currently treating as dead and also scheming to remove from the front page), Help:User Accounts, Help:User Rights, and Help:Protected Pages. I'm also thinking that Help:Custom Signatures can be merged into Help:Advanced Functions.

Any thoughts on this overhaul and on the beta new help guide nav? If we like the simple, image-oriented motif, I was thinking we could remove the featured image/article from the front page and create a similar, community-oriented nav for the front page (which could potentially go on the Discussion Center, Projects, Maintenance, and other relevant pages too). The front page a little messy and disorganized at the moment. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 05:22, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

UPDATE: I also started constructing a nav for the community pages/front page. I couldn't decide between three headers and now I'm thinking we could just rotate them, and implement the same rotation for the Help Guide nav. Input please! Cuz if I don't get input I'm just gonna go crazy and start changing things!! ^_^ Embyr 75  --Talk-- 17:04, 26 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For elimination of unhelpful pages, I think those listed can be removed. Merging custom signatures into advances functions sounds fine to me. As for the changes to the front page, I'd like to check it on a higher res computer before giving any major feedback but I do think it looks great so far. Roger that! Thanks for the feedback. Embyr 75  --Talk-- 03:36, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Manual template[edit source]

Template:Manual doesn't seem to be working correctly. It doesn't show any info entered besides the game. Zharkaer (talk) 01:13, 9 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Looks like our show/hide function isn't working, I've notified one of the other admins to see if anything can be done. MKMetroid mf Sprite.gif 01:34, 9 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think I've fixed it. Please try now. -- Prod (talk) 02:30, 10 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, it appears to be working now. Zharkaer (talk) 02:56, 10 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It appears as though it is broken again TheDLCguy (talk) 13:25, 28 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've made a fix. Can you check if it's working for you now? Prod (talk) 20:34, 28 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I can confirm it works now. TheDLCguy (talk) 16:54, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How should Zoomers and Geemers be handled?[edit source]

In Japan, the enemy Geemer is called ジーマ (Jiima) and Zoomer is likely a mistranslation, because save for Zero Mission the rest of the main series calls them Geemers in English (also ヅ (dzu) and ジ (ji) look alike.) But in the Prime series, both Zoomers and Geemers are there, and in the Japanese version they are called ギーマー (Giimaa). Should all Zoomer data besides Prime's also be with Geemer, since they are technically the same creature? Zharkaer (talk) 08:53, 1 December 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Excuse me for not knowing much about Japan V English copies, you said save for Zero Mission. Are they called Zoomers in the english copy? Phoenix! (talk) 01:16, 28 December 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, the only games to call them Zoomers in English are Metroid 1, Zero Mission, and the Prime series, I believe. Zharkaer (talk) 04:50, 28 December 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In that case, I would support having 3 articles, Zoomer/Geemer in all other games article, Zoomer (prime) article, and Geemer (prime) article

Request to Combine Green, Orange, Purple, Silver, Red, and Gold credit articles[edit source]

The problem with all 6 of these articles is that they are stubs and extremely similar, so combining them into 1 article removes 6 stubs and simply looks cleaner.

The article can have the title "Credits (insert something)". The insert something is to seperate it from other articles about staff credits. Phoenix! (talk) 01:16, 28 December 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

On a similar note, is there really a point in having separate articles for all the Door types? Zharkaer (talk) 06:04, 28 December 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Should email address be required for new accounts?[edit source]

On this wiki, a login is required to edit pages, analogous to requiring a login to post on a forum. But while nearly all forums also require an email address to be specified, this wiki doesn't require that, even for new accounts. So how about making email confirmation a requirement for all new accounts. The requirement should not affect existing users who have not (yet) specified a valid email address.

After all, many users here are registered on forums where this is required, how about specifying the same email address here as on those forums?--Xanthipos (talk) 19:52, 30 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What benefit does that provide? -- Prod (talk) 20:29, 30 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Same benefits as the equivalent does on many forums? To require it here would not exclude anyone who is not excluded on most forums.--Xanthipos (talk) 00:50, 31 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That doesn't answer the question, so I'd have to say there's no reason to require it and we won't be changing our policy. -- Prod (talk) 05:34, 31 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Do you have any idea what benefits it brings on most forums or not?--Xanthipos (talk) 07:42, 31 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I only run wikis, so no I don't. -- Prod (talk) 07:58, 31 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Metroid II's page need updating, bad[edit source]

Guys. The page is in shambles! No gameplay screenshots, no concept art, it needs help. I can try to fix it, but one person? I need some support here. If we can update this, that's a core article no one has to worry about. FederationForceYellow (talk) 20:48, 11 December 2020 (UTC) Ok, never mind. more importantly, where the heck is everybody?! Prod and I are the only people on the recent changes list! Where did everyone go? FederationForceYellow (talk) 13:46, 16 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

metriod dread[edit source]

we are seriously lacking any stuff on it

md class for Metroid Dread[edit source]

I have created Template:Md-colored for linking to Metroid Dread from "Position in Timeline" boxes. It uses the md CSS class, but this still needs to be added to the site's style sheet with a suitable color. Chloekek (talk) 13:35, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Do you have a suggested color? -- Prod (talk) 16:28, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perhaps a shade of red such as #ff000c, as it appears on the box art. Chloekek (talk) 00:07, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Done. Prod (talk) 04:26, 6 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is there a way to change the username?[edit source]

Like the title says, I'd like to change my username, but it seems there is no way to do that on my own. Thanks. -Kn0p3XX (talk) 12:48, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What username would you like it changed to? Prod (talk) 01:43, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd like to have MetroidCatcher please. Thanks! Kn0p3XX (talk) 14:48, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Done. Prod (talk) 22:28, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question regarding Dread's, Samus Returns, and Prime Remastered[edit source]

Hello, I wanted to ask a question in regards to some of the pages for Dread, Samus Returns, and Prime Remastered. I have noticed a number of these pages are incomplete and wanted to ask if I could help at all for any of these pages. I have capture card capabilities and would be able to at least get pictures and footage for Prime Remastered and Dread, though I don't want to just go ahead and add anything without permission. I know given the current state of this wiki not much has happened and have read the Copy Right page, though I just wanted to get clarification on if adding my own footage and captures are ok to better help these games pages get updated.

SuperaJokera (talk) 19:53, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Those pages could really use some help. Your changes have been good so far, so please continue.
Any images you add are technically copyrighted by the game companies. Just make sure you add the appropriate templates to the file upload pages and it should be fine. You can take a look at some of the other uploaded files as examples. Prod (talk) 23:14, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Need help Cropping and Editing Category on Images[edit source]

Hello again. I have gotten around to getting images from Dread, however, I don't know exactly how to crop them/edit the categories. Am I doing anything wrong that can be clarified? SuperaJokera (talk) 01:00, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

May Need to Update or Remove some Affiliate Links[edit source]

SuperaJokera (talk) 18:12, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have since looked in Metroid Database, and they have seemingly removed this Wiki from their list of affiliates. SuperaJokera (talk) 18:18, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
