Images help detail the subject and provide extra understanding of it, not to mention that they're more aesthetically pleasing than a plain text page.
Uploading Files
Note: Watermarked images are subject to immediate deletion
Single Files
You can upload images by pressing the upload button (or by pressing alt-shift-u (FireFox)/alt-u (other browsers)), located in the toolbox of the sidebar. This will send you to Special:Upload. There, you will see a button that says browse that allows you to look through files on your computer. After selecting the proper file, you can adjust the filename to whatever you see fit. (see Image standards for naming help)
Multiple Files
Special:MultipleUpload, also located in the toolbox (this does not appear when editing a page), can be used to upload up to five images at the same time. Like uploading single files, the file names can be adjusted in the "destination filename:" section.
Uploading New Versions of Files
If you are uploading a new version of a preexisting file, you can find a button that says "Upload a new version of this file" between the file history and file links sections of a file page. This will upload the file to the name of the older version. Please note that any changes made may take some time to appear.
Supported Formats
There are several image types accepted at Metroid Wiki, these are .png, .jpg/.jpeg, .gif, and .svg (buggy). Below are explanations for the main types of images, and how they should be presented on the wiki.
PNG
PNG, or Portable Network Graphics, is one of the most used image formats on the wiki. This is due to the color quality PNG formated images have and their ability to be made into transparencies. PNG formated images can be animated, however this is not universally supported.
JPEG
JPEG, also known as JPG or Joint Photographic Experts Group, is another commonly used format on Metroid Wiki. While JPGs suffer from quality degradation, they can be used to display large, quality images while using less file space. Unlike PNG formated images, JPGs cannot be made into transparencies.
GIF
The GIF, or Graphics Interchange Format, is the only image format that can be universally animated, making them useful for displaying animated sprites. Like PNG formatted images, GIFs are also capable of being made into transparencies. This format does suffer from a 256 color limitation however, which makes it less used on Metroid Wiki outside of animated sprites.
Format Comparison
- PNG: The PNG image retains the color quality without any degradation.
- JPG: The JPG, although having some color degradation, still maintains quality.
- GIF: The GIF's color limitations prevent several sections of the image, such as the Pinball button from rendering properly.
Licensing
Licensing templates are used to denote an images copyright status, for this, two templates can be used.
Copyright
- Main article: Template:Copyright
Template:Copyright is the primary licensing template that is used for any copyrighted images. It is added by placing {{copyright}} on a file page. This template is automatically included when using the Template:Source and need not be added in addition to it.
Fan art
- Main article: Template:Fan Art
Template:Fan Art is used on any fan made images. It is added by placing {{Fan Art}} on a file page. Note: Do not upload without permission from its author.
Image Sourcing
Image sourcing is highly important as it gives credit to the original source of the image, for this two templates are used. All images taken from an external source must have one of these templates placed on it.
Template:Source
- Main article: Template:Source
Template:Source is used for images from miscellaneous sites (Metroid Recon, Metroid Database, Nintendo.com etc.), it is also used to mark who took the image, what it was edited with, and the purpose of the editing. Filling in the optional fields also automatically categorizes the image by such parameters as type and game.
Template:WikimediaImage
- Main article: Template:WikimediaImage
Template:WikimediaImage is used for images taken from a Wikimedia site. it is added to an article by placing {{WikimediaImage| url of original image}}
Categorization
Images are categorized by their subject matter. Images such as File:Echo Visor mp2 Screenshot.jpg are categorized under Aether Wildlife and Torvus Bog Wildlife due to the inclusion of Shriekers. Because the image also shows the usage of the Echo Visor, it is also categorized under Visors.
Images are also categorized by game and image type, however this is done automatically through Template:Source.
Adding images to pages
Images are added to pages similarly to linking, for example [[File:Metroid Wiki Logo Small.png]] adds the linked image to the page. To create a regular page link to a file, add a colon to it ([[:File:Metroid Wiki Logo Small.png]] becomes File:Metroid Wiki Logo Small.png)
Optional syntax can be used to adjust the image in various ways
