The Cretaphid is a type of Alimbic defense drone. They created them to guard sacred objects, most notably the Octoliths. It consists of a central column divided into three sections that rotate against each other, with large spots on the side. These spots are capable of shooting homing plasma or lasers. They are vulnerable when blue, and can be destroyed. Once all spots are destroyed, a central crystal will rise from the top of the Cretaphid. This is the only time it can be damaged. There are four versions that Samus encounters.

Variants

Cretaphid v1

This is the standard model. It has three rotating sections. One of these sections will fire constant lasers through the spots, while the other spots are always vulnerable.

Cretaphid v2

This model uses heat-seeking plasma as its normal shots. The spots will be red most of the time, making them invulnerable. After firing, the spots will turn blue for a time. This model has no lasers.

Cretaphid v3

This model uses both lasers and plasma shots. The lasers will stop at regular intervals, making the spots vulnerable. The spots that do not fire lasers function the same as in version 2.

Cretaphid v4

The most advanced model has the characteristics of the Cretaphid v3, but is also mobile. It moves about the room, making targeting the Cretaphid difficult. The column will stop moving when the crystal rises.
