The Spider Ball as seen in Metroid Prime.

The Spider Ball's first appearance was in the second Metroid game to be released, Metroid II: Return of Samus. This first version of the spider ball had the ability to cling and maneuver on almost any surface.

In the Metroid Prime series, however, it was restricted to use on special magnetic tracks.

In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption while still restricted to tracks, the Spider Ball gained the ability to be used in conjunction with the Boost Ball to boost away from the track that it was currently attached to. This ability could be used to jump from track to track, shatter cracked glass, and even damage a mini boss.
