'''Phazon''' (called the '''''Great Poison''''' by the [[Chozo]] race) is an extremely radioactive and dangerous organic substance that can take on many forms. The mutagen is highly poisonous and corrosive, and contact with Phazon will result in immediate death or mutation in seconds.<ref name="Logbook">{{cite|Volatile ore with biomutagenic properties. Many creatures can be Corrupted by Phazon and mutate completely. The toxic substance can destroy environments, and entire planets at that. Phazon was first detected on planet [[Tallon IV]], although it has been spreading across the galaxy long before the Corruption of Tallon IV from its planet of origin, [[Phaaze]].<ref name="Logbook"/> The plot of the ''[[Metroid Prime (series)|Metroid Prime]]'' series revolves greatly around Phazon.

Not much is known regarding the true nature of Phazon as a material substance. It is highly radioactive, corrosive, and biologically toxic, and has even demonstrated low-level sentience. It has been used extensively by the [[Space Pirate]]s for its effective mutagenic properties, of which they have used for mutating their species' (as well as many others) own genetic structure, to produce more powerful and even monstrous versions of themselves and others. Though it does increase power and aggression, it does decrease the bio-form's life span, as it deteriorates cellular structure, in addition to changing the genetic code. During the course of Samus's visit to [[Phaaze]], the Phazon inside of her even affected her genetic structure to the point where her ship's bio-scanners could not even recognize her.

 

Phazon was also later adopted by the [[Galactic Federation]] for a short time, where it was converted into beam weaponry and adopted through the use of a Phazon Enhancement Device, or [[Phazon Enhancement Device Suit|P.E.D. Suit]]. This would originally be used as an external source of firepower to [[Galactic Federation Marine|Federation Troops]], but as for Samus and the other members introduced in ''[[Metroid Prime 3: Corruption]]'', the Phazon constantly grew inside of them, therefore allowing them to essentially have an unlimited source of extra firepower.

The appearance in this game is much more obvious, four huge Leviathan meteors came to the planets, crashing and depositing the Phazon into the surface, where it would grow, inhabit bioforms, supply [[Dark Samus]] of energy for the road, and even have its own, though not very substantial, life mass. Metroids in this game are much more exposed to Phazon, as easily visible in Metroid Hatchers. Pirates are now equipped with the P.E.D. Suits, which increase fire power by about 3x, and defense is almost impenetrable without going into [[Hyper Mode]]. Phazon in this game is seen almost everywhere Samus looks, weather it be a tiny puddle on the ground with a little hair growing out of it, or a huge swimming pool full of it. It can also be seen in the organisms that are designed to be destroyed for energy, with a glowing blue aura, suggesting that Phazon is present. Also, there is a greater percentage of organisms in this game that Phazon in them.

 

As for Samus, unlike other games, Phazon heals her, at and alarmingly exponential rate, similar to [[Orange Phazon]] as seen in ''Metroid Prime'', but with the completely opposite effect. This would be Blue Phazon in its purest form, which can be seen 2 times in this game. The first time Samus sees the pool of Phazon while using Hyper Mode would be the beginning of her internal corruption. As the game progresses after beating Planet Bosses, her corruption increases, of which by the end of the game reaches 100%.

 

As the game progresses, more Phazon is seen sitting around, with minor infections at the beginning, and more severe infections at [[Phaaze]]. This does not interfere with gameplay much, other than the fact that the Pirates are stronger as the game progresses also, with higher technology, and stronger firepower.  

 

At the end of the game, after Samus destroys [[Dark Samus]] and the [[Aurora Unit]], the Phazon everywhere supposedly gets destroyed, or it is in such a little amount that it doesn't matter.
