Nightbarbs are small darklings found in the games Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. They appear as small black and violet Darklings with three barb like wings. In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Nightbarbs appear on Dark Aether in the Dark Agon Wastes and the Sky Temple. They travel in huge swarms to protect themselves from their main predators, the Hunter Ing. Nightbarbs appear to be the Dark Aether counterpart to Sandbats.
In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption the Nightbarbs are no longer Darklings, but are more aggressive and will charge into Samus. There is another species called the Phazon Nightbarb that poses more of a threat. When in a swarm Phazon Nightbarbs have two different attacks. Before attacking Phazon Nightbarb will charge up energy that can be overloaded by Samus's charge shots. If charging green energy they will send three energy burst at Samus. If charging violet they will charge into Samus. When there are only a few Phazon Nightbarbs in the swarm they can individually fire small shots at Samus.
