Octopedes are Luminoth built mechanoids originally used for data delivery, but they are now used by the Ing on patrols. Octopedes travel in groups of eight and move in a rotating pattern to generate an electrical field that cannot be penetrated, Samus must destroy the Octopedes in order to disrupt the field. When they take enough damage, they will explode.
