In the first Metroid, the Varia Suit was just a pink variation of the Power Suit. However, since  ''Metroid II'' was released for the original [[Game Boy]], and the only way to differentiate the Varia Suit from the [[Power Suit]] was to change its design. This is how the suit got the large shoulder-pads that it has today. Its effects in the game are reducing damage by 50% and increasing movement speed.
