Wavers are flying creatures that are highly aggressive. They have two armored sections that protrude from the main one. They have the ability to close these sections to make a weak shield. There are a large variety of them. In Metroid, Metroid: Zero Mission and Super Metroid they limit themselves to predictable movements, never activly chasing Samus. In Metroid: Other M, they make their first 3D appearance. In this game, they will charge at any foe they see and will close their sections for shielding. In Metroid Fusion, they appear in Sector 5 (ARC), and will fly at foes, becoming embedded in anything they hit.
