History
During the Golden Age of the Luminoth, a stellar object (a Leviathan) struck Aether with such a great force that it caused a rift in space and time, creating Dark Aether and the Ing. A war soon ensued between the Luminoth and the Ing to gain control of the planetary energy, which had been split between the two dimensions. The war was fought for decades with the Ing on the verge of victory, having stolen all but one of Aether's planetary energies, and with all but one of the Luminoth in stasis tubes in the Great Temple. However, Samus Aran arrived on Aether and fought against the Ing, finally destroying them by retrieving all the planetary energy causing Dark Aether to collapse along with the Ing.

Description
The Ing appear as nearly every Darkling creature in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, but there much fewer "pure" Ing who only appear on Dark Aether. Most "pure" Ing appear as stationary and largely ignorable growths, such as the Bladepod and Ingclaw, but the Warrior Ing and Hunter Ing species are far more formidable. These Ing are best fought from the safety of a Light Crystal, as they cannot enter its protective field. Ing generally appear in small forms, such as the Inglet or Ingstorm, but Warrior Ing are around the same height as the Luminoth. There are also two Warrior Ing who have been mutated by absorbing Samus's equipment, the Jump Guardian and the Boost Guardian. Though each type of Ing has its own strengths and weaknesses, they all share a weakness to light energy.

During the war against the Luminoth, the Ing would possess nearby creatures and machines to use for attack, doing this darkened their form and generally increased their offensive prowess. They preferred to possess creatures with a natural talent for combat, such as Aether's predators and the Luminoth war-machines, as well as the Space Pirates and Metroids who became a favorite host. These possessed creatures were called "Darklings" by the Luminoth. Although these hybrid creatures were more powerful than their original forms, they gained the Ing's weakness to light energy.

Species of Ing
Emperor Ing
The eldest and highest ranking member of the Ing Horde, who resides in the Sky Temple. It is the Keeper of Dark Aether's primary energy source, which it feeds off to grow in power. When Samus fought Emperor Ing, he first appeared in a egg-like form, then changed into an eye, with two contact lense-like objects on either side, Samus had to shoot in between those to damage him, then once damaged enough, he changed into a large spider form, much like a gigantic Warrior Ing.

Larvae
As Larvae the Ing are constantly in danger and so travel in swarms to lessen this threat. As such they grow to be aggressive and hateful of all living things, making them perfect warriors. Ing Larvae are only found within the Ing Hive.

Warrior
Warrior Ing are the basic soldiers of the Ing Horde. They are somewhat powerful, using extra-dimensional laser attacks as well various kinetic offensives. Like most Ing, they can melt down into a shadowy fluid and slide across surfaces. Warrior Ing tend to be found in rooms of importance, usually containing a Sky Temple Key or power-up.

Hunter
Hunter Ing are the elites who help in destroying specific enemies of the Horde. They are viewed as the second most powerful of the Ing, after the Emperor. They can phase out of local timespace to avoid attacks. They are the only ones allowed to possess Pirate Commandos.

Ingstorm
Ingstorm are tiny Ing that float in the air and emit a destructive energy that can chew through any substance. The Light Suit is the only known item that can protect against the Ingstorm's corrosive attack.

Inglet
Inglets are the worker drones of the Horde, carrying around vital materials and essentials for the soldiers. When attacked Inglets can defend themselves, however they are quite weak and can be destroyed easily. Like Warrior Ing they can shift into a liquid state and move across surfaces.

A Warrior Ing

The Ing , also referred to as the Ing Horde or Dark Tribe, are a race of aggressive metamorphs that inhabit Dark Aether and are the primary antagonists of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.[1] After a Leviathan impacted Aether, Dark Aether was born, with it the Ing, named after the Luminoth word for terror.[2]

The Ing have a variety of dangerous abilities. One of the most dangerous is their ability to possess creatures. These possessed creatures, known as Darklings, gain increased strength and resistance.[3] The Ing are also capable of possessing machines.[4] Many Ing are also capable of firing transdimensional energy beams.

A shared weakness amongst the Ing is light, which the Luminoth exploited with the Light Beam.[5]
