In Metroid Prime, the Phazon Mines are only accessible through the sunken Space Pirate frigate in the Tallon Overworld. In the first several rooms, Phazon covers the rooms' floors. Genetically altered space pirates work there, including pirates that are only vulnerable to one of Samus's beams, and the Elite Pirates, which are twice the size of Samus. The Phazon mines is where Samus gets the Grapple Beam upgrade.
