An upgrade, or a Power Item in the original Metroid, is any advancement in technology or ability of Samus. Upgrades are present in every Metroid game thus far. They are necessary to complete every game, with minor exceptions such as Metroid Prime's Charge Beam. Although most upgrades are weapons, such as the Ice Beam, there are several other upgrades that enhance Samus's abilities. Most upgrades notably build on the Chozo-built Power Suit, since the Power Suit's versatility allows for easy upgrades.
