Not much is known regarding the true nature of phazon as a material substance. It is known for being highly radioactive and at the same time corrosive and biologically toxic, as well as even demonstrating low-level sentience. It has been used extensively by the [[Space Pirate]]s for its effective, mutagenic properties, of which they have used for mutating their species' (as well as many others) own genetic structure, to produce more powerful and even monstrous versions of themselves and others.
