A puddle of Phazon.

Phazon (called the Great Poison by the Chozo race) is an extremely radioactive and dangerous organic substance that can take on many forms. The mutagen is highly poisonous and corrosive, and contact with Phazon will result in immediate death or mutation in seconds.[1] Phazon spreads throughout the galaxy and manipulates organisms with Phazon Corruption. Many creatures can be Corrupted by Phazon and mutate completely. The toxic substance can destroy environments, and entire planets at that. Phazon was first detected on planet Tallon IV, although it has been spreading across the galaxy long before the Corruption of Tallon IV from its planet of origin, Phaaze.[1] The plot of the Metroid Prime series revolves greatly around Phazon.

Morphology

Phazon in Dark Aether.

Not much is known regarding the true nature of Phazon as a material substance. It is highly radioactive, corrosive, and biologically toxic, and has even demonstrated low-level sentience. It has been used extensively by the Space Pirates for its effective mutagenic properties, of which they have used for mutating their species' (as well as many others) own genetic structure, to produce more powerful and even monstrous versions of themselves and others. Though it does increase power and aggression, it does decrease the bio-form's life span, as it deteriorates cellular structure, in addition to changing the genetic code. During the course of Samus's visit to Phaaze, the Phazon inside of her even affected her genetic structure to the point where her ship's bio-scanners could not even recognize her.

Phazon was also later adopted by the Galactic Federation for a short time, where it was converted into beam weaponry and adopted through the use of a Phazon Enhancement Device, or P.E.D. Suit. This would originally be used as an external source of firepower to Federation Troops, but as for Samus and the other members introduced in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the Phazon constantly grew inside of them, therefore allowing them to essentially have an unlimited source of extra firepower.

Appearances

Metroid Prime

Some 50 years prior to the events of Metroid Prime, a meteor infected with Phazon struck the planet Tallon IV, causing great devastation and forcing the Chozo colonists who survived to flee.[2] Before abandoning the planet, the Chozo attempted to contain the spread of Phazon on the planet at the impact site by means of a Cradle and Cipher.

At the heart of the impact site was a Metroid specimen whose exposure to raw Phazon radically mutated it. It became the subject known as Metroid Prime. After its defeat by Samus Aran, Metroid Prime ensnares her Phazon Suit and uses it and parts of Samus's own DNA to eventually become the organism known as Dark Samus.

Around this same time, Space Pirates discovered Phazon and began experimenting with its biomutagenic properties. Initial experiments were made on Tallon Metroids in the Glacier One outpost in Phendrana Drifts, which the Space Pirates planned to use as weapons and power sources. Tests yielded such results as Hunter Metroids and Fission Metroids. Later experiments, such as Project Titan, which focused on the mutation and animation of inanimate objects,[3] resulted in the specimen Thardus before it was completely shut down.[4] Project Helix, which aimed to mutate Space Pirate DNA with Phazon,[5] finally succeeded when the Phazon Strain Vertigo was discovered by Research Team Sclera and several specimens, including Elite Pirates, a Phazon Elite, and the Omega Pirate, survived to maturity.[6]

Because this did not have much importance in this game, not much details gere given as to the effect of it on other organisms, and omit the Metroid species. Though, similarly to Tallon IV, Phazon did crash down to Aether, it was not as important as the Ing itself. As for the mutualistic relationship between the Ing and the Phazon, the Ing Emperor, along with having the immense power Aether's energy, it also had constant Phazon surrounding it. As seen in the middle of the Ing Emperor battle, it makes a hard casing around its core, which you would have to navigate and bomb, similar to the battle with Quadraxis, and navigating a few selections of Dark Aether's Sanctuary Fortress. The Emperor Ing would eventually have Phazon gas rise, decreasing Samus' ability to regen health during this period, most likely from the Ing's aquired Phazon powers.

Because the importance of Phazon to this game is low, Samus was no longer equipped with any sort of Phazon Suit, or any Phazon control. Unlike Metroid Prime, the rate or the Phazon damaging Samus' energy supply was changed to a constant rate of damage. It was also used as a small obstacle to get a missile tank. Depending on the difficulty of the game,it would hurt in different quantities

The appearence in this game is much more obvious, for huge Laviathen meteors came to the planets, crashing and depositing the Phazon into the surface, where it would grow, inhabit bioforms, supply Dark Samus of energy for the road, and even have its own, though not very substantial, life mass. Metroids in this game are much more exposed to Phazon, as easily visible in Metroid Hatchers. Pirates are now equipped with the P.E.D. Suits, which increase fire power by about 3x, and defense is amost impenetrable without going into Hyper Mode. Phazon in this game is seen almost everywhere Samus looks, weather it be a tiny puddle on the ground with a little hair growing out of it, or a huge swimming pool full of it. It can also be seen in the organisms that are designed to be destroyed for energy, with a glowing blue aura, suggesting that Phazon is present. Also, there is a greater persentage of organisms in this game that Phazon in them.

As for Samus, unlike other games, Phazon heals her, at and alarminly exponential rate, similar to Orange Phazon as seen in Metroid Prime, but with the completely opposite effect. This would be Blue Phazon in its purest form, which can be seen 2 times in this game. The first time Samus sees the pool of Phazon while using Hyper Mode would be the beginning of her internal corruption. As the game progresses after beating Planet Bosses, her corruption increases, of which by the end of the game reaches 100%.

As the game progresses, more Phazon is seen sitting around, with minor infections at the beginning, and more severe infections at Phaaze(duh). This does not interfere with gameplay much, other than the fact that the Pirates are stronger as the game progresses also, with higher technology, and stronger firepower.

At the end of the game, after Samus destroyes Dark Samus and the Aurora Unit, the Phazon everywhere supposedly gets destroyed, or it is in such a little amount that it doesn't matter. This would end the Phazon spiel, and thus ending the purpose of the Metroid Trilogy.

Logbook Entry

Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Phazon
Volatile ore with biomutagenic properties. Origin point of Phazon unknown. First detection of element on planet Tallon IV. Used by Space Pirates to produce vast levels of energy. Bioforms exposed to Phazon without proper shielding will eventually undergo radical mutation.[1]

Preliminary studies indicate that Phazon infusion could produce radical new Pirate genomes. Benevolent mutation levels are high in current test subjects. None of what we have termed 'Elite Pirates' lived to maturity; the few that survived their infanthood suffered severe psychotic breakdowns as juveniles, killing anything within their zone of perception. Research team Sclera made a recent breakthrough, in which parasite studies with a Phazon strain code-named 'Vertigo' were highly successful. Since then, we have fused Vertigo Phazon with Space Pirate DNA with great success. The latest batch of Elite Pirates have reached maturity successfully and are ready for field testing and training." —Space Pirate Data "Elite Pirates" (Metroid Prime)
