The Plasma Beam is a Chozo-designed upgrade to Samus's Arm Cannon. It serves different functions in its different appearances in the Metroid series.
In Metroid II: Return of Samus, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion, it is the most powerful of Samus's beam weapons. It has the ability to pass through obstructions, meaning that it can hit multiple targets, or hit a target through a solid wall.
In the Metroid Prime series, it serves as a heat based weapon, allowing Samus to melt ice and frigidite, weld damaged circuitry, and ignite various hostiles.
