The Reactor Core is the location of Sanctuary's main power generator. Although the Luminoth were unable to maintain the reactor after abandoning Sanctuary during their war with the Ing, much of it was automated allowing the reactor to remain operational.[1] An automated repair system also kept the reactor maintained in the Luminoth's stead, despite continuing exposure to radiation that would have eventually cause the units to shut down.[2]

Shortly after Samus enters the room for the first time, she is attack by a Quad. Once it is defeated, a force field impeding her progression is dropped. Several Rezbits are also found here. Once she is in possession of the Spider Ball, Samus can use it to reach the Energy Tank in the room.
