The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, often abbreviated as Super NES or SNES, is a home video game console made by Nintendo. The console was released in Japan in 1990 as the Super Famicom, and it was released in North America in 1991 and in Europe and Australia in 1992. Super Metroid was released for the SNES in 1994.

Several SNES games, including Super Metroid, were re-released on the Virtual Console for Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U, the SNES Classic Edition, and Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online.
