The Wave Beam is one of the upgrades to Samus's basic Arm Cannon designed by the Chozo. Its exact function varies between its appearances.
In Metroid, Metroid II: Return of Samus, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid: Zero Mission, it causes Samus's beam to oscillate as it moves through the air. It also allows the beam to travel through walls. This beam allows for easy kills of multiple targets at once.
In Metroid Prime, it causes the arm cannon to fire three oscillating electrical pulses. When charged, these will home in on any target Samus locks on to. They will briefly paralyze enemies that they hit.
