This article is about the ship seen in Metroid Prime. For the Super Smash Bros. Brawl stage, see Frigate Orpheon (stage).

Frigate Orpheon is a Space Pirate vessel that stores data from many creatures native to Planet Zebes. It appears in Metroid Prime. Samus Aran is sent there after she receives a distress signal from its remaining crew. The Parasites escaped from their cells, killing much of the crew. Samus infiltrates the frigate only to confront a Parasite Queen that falls into the ship's reactor upon its defeat, activating a self-destruct sequence. Samus barely escapes, and what remains of the frigate crashes onto nearby Tallon IV. Whilst escaping, Samus comes across the rebuilt Meta Ridley, who breaks free of his restraints and escapes the doomed vessel, fleeing to the planet below to oversee Space Pirate activity. Samus loses most of her upgrades during her escape, as commonly happens in early stages of Metroid games, from impact with an elevator caused by an explosion.

The Second Visit

After Samus obtains the Gravity Suit in Phendrana Drifts, she is able to explore the now downed Orpheon, as it is flooded with water. Aqua Reapers have infested the frigate, and a few pirates have stayed behind, most likely searching for survivors. The ship's power is not functional, causing Samus to have to activate power conduits with her Wave Beam and Thermal Visor. The vessel only has one Missile Expansion and one Energy Tank and is the only means of entering the Phazon Mines without Power Bombs, which are found in the area anyway.

Main article: Frigate Orpheon (stage)

"Frigate Orpheon" is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. A Parasite Queen is seen hanging in the background. The stage is unique in that it occasionally flips one hundred eighty degrees, slightly changing the terrain. This feature, however, does not reflect any abilities of the actual frigate. There is also a stage in Echoes' multiplayer mode called Sidehopper Station that resembles the Frigate Orpheon.
