The Power Beam is a beam of special energy generated by Samus' Arm Cannon. It is the default weapon for the Power Suit and has a high rate of fire with the capability to harm most enemies. Samus starts with the Power Beam in all games of the main series. It is usually portrayed as a yellow beam of energy, except for color-limited games such as Metroid II. Since it is a standard weapon, it is not outstanding in many ways. In terms of power, the Power Beam is outclassed by Samus's other weapons, especially weapons as powerful as the Plasma Beam and Missiles. It does, however, have the advantage of requiring no ammo, this is especially apparent in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime Hunters. The Power Beam can be upgraded in all 2-D games and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. In the first two of the Metroid Prime series, the Power Beam cannot be upgraded, but alternative weapons (the Ice Beam, Plasma Beam, Wave Beam, Light Beam, Dark Beam, and Annihilator Beam) can be obtained. In Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, the Power Beam is not made completely obsolete, being faster than the other guns in the former and not requiring ammo in the latter.

Trivia

  • Samus has started with the Power Beam in every Metroid game.
  • In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, when stepping away from a console such as a hand scanner, the Arm Cannon will act as if it is charging a beam. This only works while Samus has the Power Beam.
