Shield Pirate Militia are Pirate Militia that are equipped with an energy shield akin to that of the Shield Pirate Trooper. The unit was at first a standard Pirate Militia that was granted use of standard Pirate Trooper equipment.[1] The shield protects its holder from head-on beam projectiles, but is vulnerable to weapons with more firepower, such as Missiles and Phazon-based attacks. The most effective way of removing a shield from a trooper is whipping it off with the Grapple Lasso. Samus can also drain the Militia's energy with the Grapple Voltage or Hyper Grapple. Being that the shield is portable, the Pirate must lower the shield to fire its beam weapon, opening a small window of time for an attacker to cause damage to the Shield Pirate Trooper.[1]

Logbook entry from Metroid Prime 3: Corruption: Shield Pirate Militia
Some members of the Pirate Militia have been granted use of regular army-trooper equipment. This unit has been given the portable battle shield. Its portability is its weakness, however. Remove it from the pirate's grip to eliminate its primary defense system. The shield is also susceptible to Phazon-based attacks.[1]
