The Varia Suit is one of Samus Aran's many Chozo-created suits, and is usually the second suit to be obtained. However, in some games like Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, she starts off with this suit. It offers a higher level of shielding than the basic Power Suit, and prevents Samus from taking damage in extreme heat and acid. Its name delivers from a mistranslation of the word "Barrier". Metroid

In the first game, the Varia Suit can be obtained in Brinstar. Its effect is to reduce damage by 50%. However, do to the 8-bit capibilities of the Nintendo Entertainment System, the bulky shoulder-pads could not be made, so the suit turned from an orange color to bright pink.

Metroid II: Return of Samus

In the first Metroid, the Varia Suit was just a pink variation of the Power Suit. However, since Metroid II was released for the original Game Boy, and the only way to differentiate the Varia Suit from the Power Suit was to change its design. This is how the suit got the large shoulder-pads that it has today. Its effects in the game are reducing damage by 50% and increasing movement speed.

Super Metroid

The Varia Suit is obtained after defeating Kraid. It was in Super Metroid that the Varia Suit gained its heat-proof traits. It reduces damage by 50%, and stops damage from superheated areas.

Metroid Fusion

The Varia Suit reduces damage by 40%, and also resists damage from areas with intense heat or cold. It also makes it possible to absorb the Blue X Parasites.

Metroid Zero Mission

As in the first game, the Varia Suit is obtained in Brinstar. It resists intense heat, reduces damage by 20%, and also resists damage from Bomb Parasites and acid.

Metroid Prime

Received after defeating Flaahgra, the Varia Suit reduces damage by 20%, and like in Super Metroid, stops damage from superheated areas.

Metroid Prime: Hunters, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Samus starts with the Varia Suit, but it doesn't provides any damage resistance. In ''Metroid Prime 2: Echoes'' and "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption", it is eventually replaced by another suit later in the game(s).
