The Wave Beam is one of the upgrades to Samus's basic Arm Cannon designed by the Chozo. Its exact function varies between its appearances.

In Metroid, Metroid II: Return of Samus and Super Metroid Samus's Arm Cannon to fire a single oscillating beam. In Metroid: Zero Mission, the Arm Cannon fires three simultaneous-oscillating beams. In Metroid Fusion the Arm Cannon already fired three simultaneous beams due to the Wide Beam, but it adds oscillations. In Super Metroid, it will let the Plasma Beam fire two simultaneous beams if they are equipped together. In all 2D appearances of the Wave Beam, it can travel through walls.[1]

In Metroid Prime, it causes the arm cannon to fire three oscillating electrical pulses that will home in on any target Samus locks on to. A charged shot will briefly paralyze enemies that it hits.[2] The electrical pulses can easily destroy machines.[3] The Wave Beam is also one of Samus's weapons the Space Pirates reverse-engineered, wielded by the Wave Trooper.[4]
