Artifact of Truth

The Artifact Temple is a Metroid Prime exclusive area built by the Chozo. The Artifact Temple was built after a Leviathan crashed on Tallon IV, creating the Impact Crater. The Chozo recognized the destructiveness of Phazon, so they sealed the Impact Crater with the Artifact Temple. Sealing the crater worked to some extent, severely slowing Phazon corruption throughout the planet, but not stopping it.

The Artifact Temple is the location of a mystical lock made up of twelve pillars requiring twelve Chozo Artifacts, known collectively as the Cipher, to open.[1] These Artifacts are scattered throughout Tallon IV to avoid easy access to the Impact Crater. Once Samus finds all twelve keys, Meta Ridley attacks Samus on the Artifact Temple, where Samus defeats him and he presumably dies. This, however, is proven untrue in later games.
