The SA-X was created from the X-infected sections of Samus Aran's Power Suit. The SA-X awakens in the Quarantine Bay and escapes using a Power Bomb. Like regular X, the SA-X can reproduce asexually. As a result, there were at least 10 SA-X on board the B.S.L Research Station near the end of Metroid Fusion.

Throughout the events of Metroid Fusion, Samus's goal when the SA-X was encountered was to evade it, since the SA-X was invulnerable to all of Samus's attacks and Samus was highly vulnerable to the SA-X's Ice Beam. The SA-X cannot be destroyed by Samus until Samus obtains adequately powerful weapons (the Diffusion Missile and Varia Suit). Even with these weapons, Samus at first only manages to damage the SA-X to the point where it transforms to a beastly creature. Once this creature is defeated, the SA-X reverts to a blue X parasite form. This parasite is later absorbed by Samus, granting her access to all of her former powers in an entirely new, unidentified suit. With the suit, she gains the Ice Beam, which she uses to defeat the Omega Metroid.
