The Charge Beam was an upgrade to Samus Aran's Power Suit that created a more powerful shot through the Arm Cannon. The Charge Beam could be used with all of the Power Beams acquired through the games. In the 2-D games, Samus can perform a small type of Screw Attack when spin-jumping with a fully charged arm cannon. The Charge Beam first appeared in Super Metroid for the SNES and has been in all of the games that are after its release.

Metroid Prime Series

In the Metroid Prime series, the Charge Beam also took longer to travel, with any beam being used. This is most noticeable in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. In addition to the Charge Beam, Samus can find Charge Combos that, when combined with Missiles, make new abilities with devastating power. There are Charge Combos for every Beam in Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, the Charge attacks for the Light Beam, Dark Beam, and Annihilator Beam have very different attacks from when they are normally shot. For instance, when shot without charging, the Dark Beam fires swirling, star-shaped piece of dark matter. However, the charged Dark Beam creates a compact blob of dark matter that ensnares the enemy with dark energy that prevents movement, like the Ice Beam's charge beam. The Light Beam is similar to a shotgun when shot without charging because it fires a long, powerful shot. When a charged Light shot is fired, it releases a volley of fast spherical projectiles that home in on locked-on enemies. When a charged Annihilator shot is fired, it creates a super-powered shot that creates a space rift that massively damages targets and stuns enemies near the rift.

Also in the Metroid Prime series, as long as the button is held, the charged shot creates a tractor beam to draw in power-ups.
